Activity 3 Option 1
Ethnography of an Indigenous Culture
This activity is a good way to demonstrate what you have
learned in this course. Be sure to choose an indigenous culture
that you find interesting. Read all directions and ask questions
if you have them.
To successfully complete this activity, you will need to consult:
· your textbook
· Web sites -- no encyclopedia!
· Contact your instructor at least three weeks before this
assignment to make sure you have chosen an indigenous group.
Numerous students have made mistakes in understanding what
is meant by indigenous. Please review your readings. It is also
best to NOT choose a group in the United States (they have
assimilated to U.S. Culture and it can be difficult to write
paper).
You will be constructing an ethnography of an indigenous
culture of your choice. To help you choose an indigenous
culture, I would recommend starting at these websites:
Wikipedia Indigenous Peoples
Center for World Indigenous Studies
Indigenous Node of the World Wide Web Virtual Library
I must approve your choice by the fourth week of the semester.
This is not an activity you will want to procrastinate on.
This acivity is a capstone experience for you. It is critical that
you demonstrate you can use as many concepts from our course
as possible. You are to apply as many ideas you have learned
from the textbook, videos, and websites as possible. Underline
each concept you use from the text! While firsthand knowledge
of a culture is valuable, you must use academic resources for
this activity.
When you submit your activity, type out the question and then
your response. You will not need to organize your work into the
traditional style for a paper. It is your job to "flesh out" the
indigenous culture you have chosen. By the time you have
finished, someone who knows nothing about your indigenous
culture should be able to truly understand it.
· Include the complete address of any and all Web sites you use
Some of the following questions may be answered in a few
paragraphs, but some may require you to write more than a
page. You probably will need to consult more than one WEB
site. If you choose a culture that has been changed by another,
be certain to stick with the traditional aspects of your chosen
culture before it was contaminated by
outsiders. Integrate concepts, ideas, and theories from your
textbook and Web sites. Remember: demonstrate that you can
truly use concepts from this course.
1. Is this truly a culture? What makes it a culture? Why is it a
culture? (Remember language!)
2. Where is thisculture geographically located? Cite if you
quote.
3. Of the patterns of subsistence covered in your videos and
textbook, which is the dominant type used in your culture and
why?
4. How have these people adapted to their physical
environment?
5. Is this a preliterate or literate culture? Explain.
6. How are mates selected? (Think on a cultural basis.)
7. How is descent traced? Describe the system and why this
system works for these people.
8. What form of marriage is found? What form of family?
Describe them.
9. Describe the religion or concept(s) of the supernatural. How
does the pattern of subsistence relate to the type of religion?
10. How have outside forces changed this culture? What are
some of the challenges faced by this group today? This is an
important part of your paper.
11. What do you believe this culture's future will be
like? (Think anthropologically!)
12. Is there anything about this culture which strikes you as
unique? Discuss and describe your reaction in cultural terms.
Other Directions
1. Paper must be typed and double-spaced.
2. Cutting and pasting from a website is the same as plagiarism.
Make sure you place the information in quotes, give the website
credit, and also explain in your own words.
3. Type out every question and then answer it. The paper does
not have to be written in a formal research format.
4. Don't just list but answer the questions in paragraph form.
5. Pictures, graphs and other supporting material are great.
6. You may also want to go to the library and check out books
and use them.Grading
This rubric will be used to evaluate/grade Option 1.

Activity 3 Option 2
Interview a Professional
Format of Paper
All papers must be typed and double-spaced. All papers must
contain the following:
1. Title page
2. Introduction
3. Development
4. Conclusion
5. Bibliography/footnotes: must use at least 3 academic
resources in writing this paper. Only one of those resources can
be an encyclopedia.
6. All papers must incorporate as many anthropological
concepts as possible.
7. All papers must be between 5 to 7 pages in length (typed and
double-spaced with no larger than 1 inch margins).
8. Choice of topic must be approved by instructor
Content of Paper
Many times students taking Sociology 1145 do not understand
why this course is a requirement. In your paper address the
question of why understanding culture is important to your
major and/or career choice. Include information from one
interview, information from websites and research you do, and
include examples of mistakes made by people in your field due
to the lack of understanding cultural differences.
Part I of your activity is to interview a professional that is
currently employed in a career that you are planning to work in
for the future. It is much better to do this project based on your
profession. This way you will be able to find professional
sources on why cultural competency is important in your field.
You will be interviewing them to find out what role "culture"
and cultural issues play in their job. In your paper just
summarize what you learned from the interview and include the
direct answers to each question at the end of your paper as an
attachment. Be sure to refer to class notes on interviewing.
Part II of your activity is to locate some written resources
concerning your field and issues surrounding culture and
cultural diversity. (The internet is a good start for this).
Extra credit points will be awarded to those of you who go the
extra mile and use both creativity and good research to write
this paper.
Interview Guideline
1. Name of interviewee?
2. Career?
3. How long employed?
4. Where, When, and How long was the interview?
5. Why did they choose this career/job?
6. What educational/technical training do they have?
7. Did they ever take an anthropology class or cultural courses?
What? When?
8. What is their "cultural" background? How long has their
family been in the United States ? Let them talk about their
heritage.
9. As an interviewer note if you perceive any ethnocentrism in
the interview?
10. Have they had any intercultural experiences? Friends,
Travel, etc.
11. How would they assess their knowledge of other cultures?
Are there cultures they would like to learn more about? Why?
12. In their job, how often does culture come into play? Can
they cite some examples. Have they had any cultural
misunderstandings? Explain.
13. What is the best way in their opinion to deal with cultural
differences? Why?
14. Overall, what insights did you "pick up" in this interview?
Guidelines for Conducting Interviews
· Be sure to contact the person early and do not wait until the
last minute
· Give them the questions ahead of time
· You can either do the interview via email or in person.
Telephone interviews are not accepted
· You can with permission of person tape record the interview
and then submit the tape as evidence of completing the
interview
· Email interviews work well because you can just print them
out
· Send a follow up formal thank you letter thanking the person
for their time

Visit the SunWatch Indian Village and Archaeological Park
This is a fun activity and something that you could take your
whole family to visit. I highly recommend this one for those
with limited time and for those who have a real interest in
archaeology. I think it is one of Dayton s best kept secrets. I
would recommend that you go when there is a special event
scheduled; however just going for a tour can be very
educational.
Directions on how to get there, Cost of admission, Special
Events, and Times of Operation can be found at the Sun Watch
website.
Watch the video here: Sunwatch Village Video
On your visit you will want to find the answers to the following
questions and submit them by the deadline. You will also need
to do the following two things:
1. Take a picture of your receipt and/or scan a picture and
include it with your paper.
2. Unfortunately, we have had students just show up and pay
and just leave. This is not only just cheating but also very
inconsiderate of the museum and of the reputation of your
college. When you arrive at the museum to pay, you will need to
let them know you are a Sinclair Community College Student
and ask for the museum visit form. This form will need to be
completed while you are the museum and returned to
the museum upon your departure (I am so sorry to have to
require this because I know most students are honest about this.
My apologies to those of you who would always be honest about
these types of things). The form will have the following
questions:
a. Your name
b. Date and time of your arrival
c. Please watch the movie and have the volunteer at the museum
note that you did watch the movie.
d. Please answer three questions about what you learned that
day (these may change when you write the paper).
e. Date and time of departure ( In order to watch the film, walk
around the museum and outside, I would recommend 90 minutes
at minimum.
Please be sure to ask and complete this form. I will not be able
to accept your paper without the completion of this information.
Please be sure to return to the front-desk volunteer. Should
there be any problem, just take these questions with you and be
sure to answer them while there.
This is not a formal paper and all you need to do is type of
your answers to the following questions and submit as Activity
5. Please note that you need to use 4 sources.
1. What is Sun Watch Indian Village? How was it discovered?
What is the history behind this park?
2. What archaeological evidence did they use to learn about this
group of people?
3. How do they think they lived? What did they eat? How did
they survive? Do we know anything about their religion? What
about their family structure? Were they nomadic? Discuss as
much as you can about this group of people.
4. What were three things that surprised you about your visit?
5. Discuss three things that you learned that specifically related
to this course? Be sure to use your textbook and reference it.
6. What is meant by the term public archaeology? How does Sun
Watch approach their research? What concerns to Native
American groups have today about museums like Sun Watch
Village? See the Sun Watch website for help in answering these
questions.
7. How do you feel about museums displaying human remains of
dead people like ancient Indians or Egyptian mummies for
example? What do you think about groups that are protesting
this practice?
8. Any other thoughts you would like to share?
Make sure for Option 5 that you answer in complete sentences
and take some time in answering the questions. I would
recommend at least a paragraph or two on each question.
Pictures are great and welcomed. Also, be sure to cite your
textbook.
Have fun and enjoy your visit. Be sure to visit the gift shop and
take time to see the film about Sun Watch.

  • 5. double-spaced with no larger than 1 inch margins). 8. Choice of topic must be approved by instructor Content of Paper Many times students taking Sociology 1145 do not understand why this course is a requirement. In your paper address the question of why understanding culture is important to your major and/or career choice. Include information from one interview, information from websites and research you do, and include examples of mistakes made by people in your field due to the lack of understanding cultural differences. Part I of your activity is to interview a professional that is currently employed in a career that you are planning to work in for the future. It is much better to do this project based on your profession. This way you will be able to find professional sources on why cultural competency is important in your field. You will be interviewing them to find out what role "culture" and cultural issues play in their job. In your paper just summarize what you learned from the interview and include the direct answers to each question at the end of your paper as an attachment. Be sure to refer to class notes on interviewing. Part II of your activity is to locate some written resources concerning your field and issues surrounding culture and cultural diversity. (The internet is a good start for this). Extra credit points will be awarded to those of you who go the extra mile and use both creativity and good research to write this paper. Interview Guideline 1. Name of interviewee? 2. Career? 3. How long employed? 4. Where, When, and How long was the interview? 5. Why did they choose this career/job? 6. What is the best way in their opinion to deal with cultural differences? Why? 14. Overall, what insights did you "pick up" in this interview? Guidelines for Conducting Interviews · Be sure to contact the person early and do not wait until the last minute · Give them the questions ahead of time · You can either do the interview via email or in person. Telephone interviews are not accepted · You can with permission of person tape record the interview and then submit the tape as evidence of completing the interview · Email interviews work well because you can just print them out · Send a follow up formal thank you letter thanking the person for their time Grading This rubric will be used to evaluate/grade Option 2. I highly recommend this one for those with limited time and for those who have a real interest in archaeology. I think it is one of Dayton s best kept secrets. I would recommend that you go when there is a special event scheduled; however just going for a tour can be very educational. Directions on how to get there, Cost of admission, Special Events, and Times of Operation can be found at the Sun Watch website. Watch the video here: Sunwatch Village Video
  • 10. On your visit you will want to find the answers to the following questions and submit them by the deadline. You will also need to do the following two things: 1. Take a picture of your receipt and/or scan a picture and include it with your paper. 2. Unfortunately, we have had students just show up and pay and just leave. This is not only just cheating but also very inconsiderate of the museum and of the reputation of your college. When you arrive at the museum to pay, you will need to let them know you are a Sinclair Community College Student and ask for the museum visit form. This form will need to be completed while you are the museum and returned to the museum upon your departure (I am so sorry to have to require this because I know most students are honest about this. My apologies to those of you who would always be honest about these types of things). The form will have the following questions: a. Your name b. Date and time of your arrival c. Please watch the movie and have the volunteer at the museum note that you did watch the movie. d. Please answer three questions about what you learned that day (these may change when you write the paper). e. Date and time of departure ( In order to watch the film, walk around the museum and outside, I would recommend 90 minutes at minimum. Please be sure to ask and complete this form. I will not be able to accept your paper without the completion of this information. Please be sure to return to the front-desk volunteer. Should there be any problem, just take these questions with you and be sure to answer them while there. This is not a formal paper and all you need to do is type of your answers to the following questions and submit as Activity 5. Please note that you need to use 4 sources. 1. What is Sun Watch Indian Village? How was it discovered? What is the history behind this park?
  • 11. 2. What archaeological evidence did they use to learn about this group of people? 3. How do they think they lived? What did they eat? How did they survive? Do we know anything about their religion? What about their family structure? Were they nomadic? Discuss as much as you can about this group of people. 4. What were three things that surprised you about your visit? 5. Discuss three things that you learned that specifically related to this course? Be sure to use your textbook and reference it. 6. What is meant by the term public archaeology? How does Sun Watch approach their research? What concerns to Native American groups have today about museums like Sun Watch Village? See the Sun Watch website for help in answering these questions. 7. How do you feel about museums displaying human remains of dead people like ancient Indians or Egyptian mummies for example? What do you think about groups that are protesting this practice? 8. Any other thoughts you would like to share? Make sure for Option 5 that you answer in complete sentences and take some time in answering the questions. I would recommend at least a paragraph or two on each question. Pictures are great and welcomed. Also, be sure to cite your textbook. Have fun and enjoy your visit. Be sure to visit the gift shop and take time to see the film about Sun Watch.
