3M was founded in 1902 and has been at the
forefront of technological innovation ever since
What we stand for
We are committed to doing business
in a way that lives up to our company
values:
● we satisfy customers with superior
quality, value and service
● we provide investors with an
attractive return through sustained,
quality growth
● we respect our social and physical
environment
● we aim to be a company that
employees are proud to be
part of.
Working for a sustainable future
We are very proud of our reputation as an ethical company and value our
relationships with all our stakeholders.
We are committed to contributing to sustainable development through social
responsibility, environmental protection and economic progress.
Our people
We believe that if our people grow and are successful our company will grow
and be successful.
That’s why we aim to create a working environment in which employees are able
to realise their potential, explore ideas outside their day-to-day jobs and really
deliver for their customers.
We are an equal opportunities employer and value the creative power of
diversity in the workforce.
Making amazing things
happen
We believe that nothing should be
allowed to stand between our people
and a brilliant idea that could make life easier,
healthier, safer and more productive for
people everywhere.
Innovative 3M technologies range from the
adhesives and abrasives with which we have
been associated for over 100 years, to some
life-changing new breakthroughs in, for
example, nanotechnology, light management
and pharmaceuticals.
This is us
3M was founded in 1902 and today employs more than
69,000 people around the world, delivering an
extensive range of products, technologies and services
to our customers in more than 200 countries.
The UK and Ireland is home to one of the largest 3M
subsidiaries outside the USA, employing 3,300 people.
Our products touch nearly every aspect of modern life,
and well-known 3M brands include Scotch, Post-it,
Scotchgard, Thinsulate and Scotch-Brite.
In total, we offer 55,000 solutions to problems in the
home, at work or in between. And we invest more than
$1 billion a year in research and development to ensure
that we continue to meet our customers’ needs.

Passport to safety
In 2005, 3M won the contract to develop, test and
implement the UK’s first biometric passport issuance
system. We will provide the software and hardware for
biometric passports issued at over 100 British
embassies, consulates and high commissions around
the world.
Safety, security and
protection
In an age in which the issues of safety and
security are rapidly rising up both individual
and corporate agendas, 3M is helping to reduce
anxiety levels.
Operations in more
than 60 countries
Ensuring safety, minimising risk
We aim to keep people safe – at home, on the road, in
an emergency – and enable individuals and
organisations to identify, secure, authenticate and track
materials, people and information.
We may never eliminate risk entirely from modern life,
but we can certainly help to minimise it. Whatever the
threat - from air pollution to international terrorism - we
offer a range of solutions from security films to
protective clothing.
In the warm zone
In the event of a chemical, biological, radiological or
nuclear disaster, emergency services medical staff
would be kitted out in the unique Chemprotex suit,
developed by 3M and protective suit manufacturing
company Respirex, in conjunction with the National
Health Service.
Safety clothing
We supply safety clothing and equipment for the
emergency services, the construction industry,
the Royal Mail and London Underground.
Unmistakable signs
We manufacture a range of durable,
highly-reflective pavement markings,
primers and adhesives as well as
roadway marking equipment.
Our High Intensity Prismatic (HIP)
Reflective Sheeting - which makes
road signs easier to read in all
weathers - is helping to meet safety
and congestion targets on major
roads in the UK and Ireland.
Drivers approaching 3M™ Driver
Feedback Signs tend to reduce their
speed by an average of 10% - a
terrific result when a reduction of
just 2% can save a child’s life.
And a new generation of traffic
bollards – the Flecta® from Traffic
Management Products Ltd –
incorporates 3M’s Diamond Grade
Fluorescent Sheeting and is
proving highly visible, resilient and
long-lasting.
Road safety
3Minnovation is
playing a major role
in road safety - improving the
visibility of traffic signs,
vehicles and road markings,
and encouraging motorists to
watch their speed.
Seen and not hurt
Road safety for schoolchildren is the focus of our community programme
and in 2005 we distributed 50,000 high-visibility vests to children between
the ages of seven and ten.

Research and development expenditure of
more than $1.2 billion in 2005
Transport
From the smallest car to the largest airbus, from
the sleekest boat to the high-speed train - 3M is
involved, from design through to repair.
Solutions in motion
We work closely with our customers in the automotive,
rail, marine and aerospace industries, helping them to
develop designs, improve manufacture and tackle repairs
and maintenance.
In the automotive market, for example, we provide a range
of consumables for bodyshops, including sandpaper,
masking tape, cleaning and finishing products, respirators
and paint preparation systems.
Visions of Eden
The film used to make the hexagonal window panels for the Tropical Biome at
Cornwall’s Eden Project was produced using a 3M polymer - Dyneon™ EFTE
(ethylene tetrafluorethylene).
Architecture and construction
3Msolutions are enabling architects, designers, planners and
builders to create visually stunning, practical, energy-
efficient buildings.
Building confidence
Our Scotchshield™ and Scotchtint™ Window Films can be attached to glass
for safety and/or energy conservation purposes. While our 3M™ VHB™ Tapes -
which have the bonding strength to replace silicone adhesives, stud bolts and
other unsightly mechanical fasteners - are making new material combinations
and high-impact visual designs possible.
Healthcare
In operating theatres,
doctors’ surgeries, dental
and orthodontic practices,
the community and the
home, 3M is helping to
prevent the spread of
infection, protect skin,
deliver medication and
brighten smiles.
New modes of healthcare
We partner with other pharmaceutical companies to develop new and improved
ways of delivering drugs to the body, and conduct our own pioneering research
into novel pharmaceutical compounds. And we supply the NHS with market-
leading solutions for sterilization, infection prevention and chronic wound care.
A new class of compounds, known as Immune Response Modifiers (IRM) -
discovered by 3M researchers back in the early 1980s - can destroy virally
infected or cancer cells. IRMs have potential uses in a wide variety of diseases,
including specific dermatological and sexual health conditions.
3M foam dressings offer real benefits for patients and nursing staff when it
comes to managing chronic ‘wet’ wounds. And our unique spoke design
means that they can be fitted more easily to ‘problem’ areas such as elbows
and knees.
Beating the bugs
The food industry recognises 3M as a trusted leader in microbial testing
solutions for detecting contamination at all stages of food preparation.

Good vibrations
Our low-vibration grinding
machines and special abrasives
are helping to tackle the
problem of hand-arm vibration
syndrome – the cause of a
number of industrial injuries.
Making it happen
At the same time, we’re drawing
on our expertise in low-impact,
environmentally-friendly
technologies to enable
companies to reduce waste
and manage their
environmental impact.
Our tried and tested in-house
Product Design and
Manufacturing Services (PDMS)
approach is now also available to
all our external customers. Our
warehouse management system
really puts the customer in
control. And even as goods are
leaving the factory, we’re there
helping, for example, with
packaging systems.

Telecommunications
and utilities
In a 24/7/365 world in which information needs
to travel ever faster and to be instantly available
whenever and wherever our customers choose,
3M supplies every major telecommunications
provider in the world.
Manufacturing
and industrial
3Mis helping
manufacturing
companies around the world
gain a competitive edge by
combining speed, accuracy,
improved quality and
design with sustainable
cost reduction.
Making the right connections
Our experience of the telecommunications field - from
networks to routers, from fibre optics to copper cabling
- enables us to operate as a one-stop shop for a
broad range of cabling, connecting, protecting and
testing products.
When, for example, Fujitsu Telecommunications - a
Japanese company which provides equipment for BT
exchanges - needed specialist electronic solutions it
turned to us. We came up with a bespoke cable assembly
and interconnect solution that could double the number of
phone lines in the same unit.
Power switch
We’re also active in the utilities industry where our Cold
Shrink range of cable jointing and terminating solutions,
enabled utility giant ScottishPower to switch its entire
network from traditional paper-insulated cables to 3-core
polymeric plastic cabling.
An age of exploration
Around 10,000 3M products – from anti-corrosion
agents to fire extinguishing systems - have a key part
to play in the oil and gas exploration industries,
enhancing productivity and protecting human health
and the environment.
Electronics
manufacturing
In the electronics market,
3M is helping to meet the
relentless demand for ever-
smaller devices and faster
data speeds.
Only connect
Our Flexible Circuits – tiny, light and
with a vast amount of electronic
circuitry squeezed onto them - can be
found in devices of all kinds, from
mobile phones, to inkjet printers, aircraft
cockpit displays and hearing aids.
And look at any LCD monitor, laptop or
mobile phone with a colour screen and
you’re probably looking at our
innovative range of optical technologies
in action.
The power of the Post-it®
brand
Our Post-it®
Notes have been bringing colour and organisation to offices
for over 25 years and there are now more than 1,000 products in the
Post-it®
range.
we’re part of the fabric
of everyday life
Home and office
We’re part of the fabric of everyday life,
helping to make homes and offices
around the world cleaner, more hygienic,
safer, more stylish and more energy efficient.
Here, there and everywhere
In the kitchen, our Scotch-Brite™
Cleaning Products
are lending more power to your elbow. In the
bathroom medicine cabinet, Nexcare™
Active Strips
will help you cope with everyday cuts and scrapes.
Our window films can improve safety and save
energy. Scotchgard™
Protector on your carpets will
help protect them from walked in dirt and accidental
spills and stains.
We’re also in the office, helping to create comfortable
and efficient working environments. Our polarizing
light filter technology, for example, is being used in
the development of energy-efficient desk lights, and
we’ve produced a range of privacy filters that reduce
the viewing angle on a PC or a laptop so that only
users can see the screen.
