 Spread the seats
 Listen carefully to the instructions
 22 min
 Individual/no discussions
 Raise your hand quietly for questions and wait
for me to come
 Stay seated until I ask you to give me back the
papers
 WALT : Associations between numerical variables
 Scatterplots
 WILF : Seatings in semi-circles and focused class
work
 TIB : There are many versions of frequency tables
and each version helps us peek at the data from
a different perspective. This opens insights.
 Quiz 4 Tuesday 9th October (Lesson 11 to Lesson 15
in statistics package)
 All my powerpoints are accessible either through
classroom or engrade
 I post all corrections on engrade
 My next office hours (in ASI) are Thursday 4th of
October after school.
 Target behavior of Month : Staying focused and on
task during classtime
 Conditional relative frequencies : divide
frequency by marginal frequency
 Association between variables means there is
a correlation,as one increases the other
increases/decreases
 Conditional frequencies cqn be used to
assess whether there is an association
between variables
 I could see if you didn’t do it, after 3 strikes I
inform your parents.
 Khanacademy skills related to relative
frequencies
 No homework for next session
 Correction
 Instructions :
• Listen carefully to the instructions
• Take 25 minutes to do the exercises on your own
• Stay focused
• Voice level 1 discussions (no excessive noise)
• Raise your hand quietly for questions and wait for
me to come

 We analyzed categorical data using frequency
tables
 Concerning numerical variables, we use
scatterplots
 Scatterplot : If two numerical variables are
denoted by x and y, then the scatterplot of
the data is the plot of the data pairs
Is there any pattern in this scatterplot ?
Yes,we always look for patterns and try to
explain them

 Hardcopy is handed out
 Individual work,voice level 0
 I will be going around for help, raise your
hand
 Take 7 minutes to do this

 Is there a relationship between the number of
cell phone calls and age, or does it look like
the data points are scattered?
 There is a relationship.
 If there is a relationship between the number
of cell phone calls and age, does the
relationship appear to be linear?
 The pattern is linear—as age increases, the
number of cell phone calls decrease.

 Is there a relationship between moisture
content and frying time, or do the data points
look scattered?
 There is a relationship
 If there is a relationship between moisture
content and frying time, does the relationship
look linear?
 As the frying time increases, the moisture
content decreases. It is not linear.
 This is called an exponential curve
Scatter Plot 3 shows data for the prices of bike
helmets and the quality ratings of the helmets
(based on a scale that estimates helmet quality).
 Is there a relationship between quality rating
and price, or are the data points scattered?
 There is no relationship; the points are
scattered.
 If there is a relationship between quality
rating and price for bike helmets, does the
relationship appear to be linear?
 Because there does not appear to be a
relationship between quality rating and price,
it does not make sense to say the relationship
is either linear or not linear.
 What does this tell us about rating and price?
 There is no relationship between rating and
price that we can summarize
 Is an expensive helmet going to provide the
best protection?
 Based on data, an expensive helmet may not
necessarily provide the best protection
 Read example 1 page 83

Warning 2 Demerit
 Do not talk unless you have
permission (Raise your hand)
 No talking back (Come see in end
of class)
 Stay focused and on task
 Respect your classmates and
teacher
 Be prepared
 You are expected to do your homework on the
due date (no excuses)
 Every time you miss a homework you get a
strike, after 3 your parents are informed
 Not doing your homework will negatively affect
your grade in participation and quizzes
 The corrected quiz as well as rubrics will be posted on
Engrade.
 An individual assesment means no discussion at all. Any
talking will result in a 0.
 If you missed a quiz/test, you are responsible to come to
office hours to retake it.
 Come see me right after class or office hours to discuss
your copy, do not bring it up inside class.
 Any copy written in pencil cannot be considered for re-
grading, use a pen.
