What is empoldering? Empoldering normally refers to the creation of polders .
What is a polder? Polder-Dutch word for reclaimed land   A polder is a piece of land in a low-lying area reclaimed from a body of water by building dikes and by drainage.Polders normally constitute areas of land reclaimed from a body of water, such as the lake or the sea, and are consequently below the surrounding water level.
Polders are enclosed by dikes to keep out sea or river water from flowing in. The dikes also serve to protect the polder from erosion. Polders are continually maintained by systems of drainage canals and pumps which prevent the water level in the polder from being too high. In fact, many of the windmills you see in The Netherlands are used to pump water from the polders so as to keep the amount of water in the soil for cultivation. Features of Polder
First Stage- A dike is constructed around the area to be reclaimed to keep water from coming in. Sea water in the reclaimed area is then replaced with freshwater. Second Stage- The area is drained using pumps and drainage canals. The soil is not fertile enough for cultivation and not firm for building. Third Stage-A type of plant, Reeds, are sown by aircraft to help the soil to form and to absorb excess water in the soil. Fourth Stage-After about three years, the reeds are burnt and ploughs are used to mix the fertile ash into the soil. Drainage pipes are also constructed at that stage. Final Stage- After a period of up to 15 years, the polder is ready for growing crops, building houses and constructing road and also for commercial and recreational purposes. Method Of Empoldering
