Spawn is the vegetative mycelial network of a mushroom that develops after fungal spores germinate on a growth medium. Spawn production involves first preparing a master/stock culture by inoculating a pure fungal culture onto a sterilized substrate like wheat grains. This master culture is then used to inoculate more substrate to multiply the spawn. The commercial spawn grown this way is then used to inoculate compost beds for mushroom cultivation. Good spawn is characterized by proper coating of substrate grains by mycelium without any bacterial or mold contamination. Spawn storage is best short-term at 4-6°C for up to a month.
