ENVIRONMENT -MEANING
• Environment is a surrounding External conditions influencing development or growth of people,
animals or plants.
• The sum total of all surroundings of a living organism, including natural forces and other living
things, which provide conditions for development and growth as well as danger and damage.

Eg: Animals, Plants, Insects, Birds and etc

Education for the environment: Environment education is a kind of education which will seek to make
pupils fully aware of the problems connected with the environment so that they will be able to tackle
these problems with a sense of responsibility and with the technical skills which will enable them to
contribute to their solutions along with other members of the community.

Education about the environment: Environmental education includes conservation, outdoor and natural
resource education as well as nature study but it also includes everything that relates to man and his
environment. Man not his technology, not the physical or biological world as a separate entity , not
the arts or perfections operating in segregated spheres, but all of these as they effect the quality of
human life, become the pivotal concern. He is only the conscious manipulator of the environment and
his manipulation must b directed towards enhancing the quality of environment.

Education through the Environment: Environment education is not a separate subject. It is a multi-
disciplinary approach both to education and to the problems of environment. The entire subject in the
existing curriculum does have some information pertaining to environment but in their present form
the subjects fail to relate to one another. Just a piecemeal attacks on environmental problems are
ineffective so is piecemeal education about the environment inadequate because it does not take to
account the independence of the pieces. Environment education should result in the knowledge,
desires and ability necessary to direct one’s conduct toitsfard improving the quality of life.
