Solution Brief
IBM Systems and Technology
The result is accelerated business intelligence (BI), reporting
and analysis capabilities with direct access to the in-memory
data models residing in SAP In-Memory Database software.
Advanced analytical workflows and planning functionality
directly access operational data from SAP ERP or other
sources. SAP HANA provides a high-speed data warehouse
environment, with SAP In-Memory Database serving as a next-
generation, in-memory acceleration engine.
Delivered on IBM eX5 enterprise servers that provide leading
performance and scalability, SAP HANA efficiently processes
and analyzes massive amounts of data by packaging SAP’s use of
in-memory technology, columnar database design, data com-
pression and massive parallel processing together with essential
tools and functionality such as data replication and analytic
modeling.
Made possible through recent technology advances that com-
bine large, scalable memory, multi-core processing, fast solid-
state storage and data management, in-memory computing
leverages these technology innovations to establish a continuous
real-time link between insight, foresight and action to deliver
significantly accelerated business performance and reduced total
cost of ownership (TCO).
To explore, model and analyze data in real time, SAP HANA
can be leveraged as a high-performance “side-by-side” data
mart to an existing data warehouse; it can also serve as the data-
base in SAP Business Suite™ and SAP NetWeaver™ Business
Warehouse environments.
IBM eX5 systems with the Intel Xeon
processor E7 family power SAP HANA
IBM is the first to decouple memory and input/output (I/O)
from the processor—moving processing power from what’s the-
oretically possible to what’s actually possible. IBM System x®
servers with fifth-generation IBM eX5 technology enable SAP
HANA customers to benefit from a shared vision that delivers
simplicity and automation designed to help organizations accel-
erate business outcomes while lowering TCO.
These System x servers are equipped with processors from the
Intel Xeon processor E7 family, which combine exceptional raw
compute power with increased memory bandwidth and support
for significantly greater memory capacity to deliver superior
performance to previous-generation processors. With up to ten
cores in each processor, the four-socket x3950 X5 can be scaled
to 40 cores and 80 threads with the use of Intel Hyper-
Threading Technology. Organizations can achieve extreme
scaling within each node for running demanding workloads on
a compact system. IBM System x servers based on the Intel
Xeon processor E7 family offer 20x more performance than
single-core servers,5 enabling greater responsiveness from SAP
applications.
Co-innovation between Intel and SAP stretches back more than
10 years, and the latest manifestation is the excellent results
from SAP HANA on the Intel Xeon processor E7 family, for
extraordinary efficiency and business value:
●  ●
Intelligent performance tailors processor operation dynami-
cally to the needs of the workload, for high throughput when
it matters most.
●  ●
Automated energy efficiency powers up only those processor
components that are needed at any given time, for break-
through performance per watt and ROI.
●  ●
Advanced reliability keeps the server running smoothly when
otherwise-unrecoverable processor or memory errors occur.
In addition, Intel Xeon E7 Processors feature energy efficiency
technology (Intel Intelligent Power Technology (IPT)) lever-
aged from Intel’s Efficient Performance product line. IPT auto-
matically shifts the CPU and memory into the lowest available
power state, while delivering the performance you need.

Solution Brief
IBM Systems and Technology
Simple and Seamless Scalability
Using the workload optimized solution models you can com-
bine multiple models together to create multi-node scale-out
configurations. These multi-node scale-out configurations
enable you to achieve larger SAP HANA memory sizes for SAP
NetWeaver™ Business Warehouse and data mart workloads
simply by adding compute nodes. IBM was the first vendor to
have multi-node scale-out configurations and currently has
16 node x3690 X5 and 56 node x3950 X5 with high availability
solutions validated. You can start with one node and grow your
environment to 56 nodes. This modular approach enables you
to invest in a Workload Optimized solution for SAP HANA
and grow your infrastructure as your SAP HANA environment
grows. In addition, you can handle unplanned outages by
including an additional High Availability (HA) node in your
configuration. SAP and IBM have demonstrated extreme scal-
ability by testing a 100 TB HANA System.
These multi-node scale-out configurations do not require exter-
nal storage or a Storage Area Network (SAN) as other vendor
solutions do. The IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS™)
software in these configurations has the unique capability to use
the storage contained within each node helping to simplify the
infrastructure required for SAP HANA. In addition, only
IBM has a High Availability concept which allows customers to
seamlessly extend their installation to enable High Availability
using GPFS replication and an additional stand-by node.
IBM Intelligent Cluster integrated packaging and assembly can
help speed installation and deployment of multi-node scale-out
HA configurations as well as reduce implementation risk.
IBM and SAP accelerate value and
performance
By implementing SAP HANA on eX5 enterprise servers, cus-
tomers can realize:
●  ●
Faster time-to-value by bringing all the data in the enter-
prise to decision makers in seconds, not weeks or months—
and presenting it in an easy-to-understand and usable format
so your company can run smarter, react quicker and perform
better.
●  ●
Faster performance, less complexity and greater effi-
ciency from a powerful and proven converged infrastructure
environment of integrated technologies that simplify
operations, consolidate resources and dynamically migrate
functionalities as business changes, while delivering the ability
to quickly change the way users look at mass amounts of data
without compromising data integrity or security. SAP HANA

Integrated data protection
IBM Tivoli Storage Manager for Enterprise Resource Planning
(TSM for ERP) is a simple, scalable data protection solution for
SAP HANA and SAP ERP. SAP HANA’s memory-to-disk
backups create export files that need to be preserved in case
recovery is required. TSM for ERP includes a one-step com-
mand that automates SAP HANA backup and TSM data
protection—a simple process that preserves SAP HANA data
safety in TSM. Full and incremental (log only) backups can be
performed so users can make frequent backups throughout the

  • 2. 2 Solution Brief IBM Systems and Technology The result is accelerated business intelligence (BI), reporting and analysis capabilities with direct access to the in-memory data models residing in SAP In-Memory Database software. Advanced analytical workflows and planning functionality directly access operational data from SAP ERP or other sources. SAP HANA provides a high-speed data warehouse environment, with SAP In-Memory Database serving as a next- generation, in-memory acceleration engine. Delivered on IBM eX5 enterprise servers that provide leading performance and scalability, SAP HANA efficiently processes and analyzes massive amounts of data by packaging SAP’s use of in-memory technology, columnar database design, data com- pression and massive parallel processing together with essential tools and functionality such as data replication and analytic modeling. Made possible through recent technology advances that com- bine large, scalable memory, multi-core processing, fast solid- state storage and data management, in-memory computing leverages these technology innovations to establish a continuous real-time link between insight, foresight and action to deliver significantly accelerated business performance and reduced total cost of ownership (TCO). To explore, model and analyze data in real time, SAP HANA can be leveraged as a high-performance “side-by-side” data mart to an existing data warehouse; it can also serve as the data- base in SAP Business Suite™ and SAP NetWeaver™ Business Warehouse environments. IBM eX5 systems with the Intel Xeon processor E7 family power SAP HANA IBM is the first to decouple memory and input/output (I/O) from the processor—moving processing power from what’s the- oretically possible to what’s actually possible. IBM System x® servers with fifth-generation IBM eX5 technology enable SAP HANA customers to benefit from a shared vision that delivers simplicity and automation designed to help organizations accel- erate business outcomes while lowering TCO. These System x servers are equipped with processors from the Intel Xeon processor E7 family, which combine exceptional raw compute power with increased memory bandwidth and support for significantly greater memory capacity to deliver superior performance to previous-generation processors. With up to ten cores in each processor, the four-socket x3950 X5 can be scaled to 40 cores and 80 threads with the use of Intel Hyper- Threading Technology. Organizations can achieve extreme scaling within each node for running demanding workloads on a compact system. IBM System x servers based on the Intel Xeon processor E7 family offer 20x more performance than single-core servers,5 enabling greater responsiveness from SAP applications. Co-innovation between Intel and SAP stretches back more than 10 years, and the latest manifestation is the excellent results from SAP HANA on the Intel Xeon processor E7 family, for extraordinary efficiency and business value: ●  ● Intelligent performance tailors processor operation dynami- cally to the needs of the workload, for high throughput when it matters most. ●  ● Automated energy efficiency powers up only those processor components that are needed at any given time, for break- through performance per watt and ROI. ●  ● Advanced reliability keeps the server running smoothly when otherwise-unrecoverable processor or memory errors occur. In addition, Intel Xeon E7 Processors feature energy efficiency technology (Intel Intelligent Power Technology (IPT)) lever- aged from Intel’s Efficient Performance product line. IPT auto- matically shifts the CPU and memory into the lowest available power state, while delivering the performance you need.
