4th Grade Mathematics: FractionsTeacher: Damon W. Harris II
Fractions: Part of ObjectsFractions are parts of objectsEx: A Hershey's bar has 12 piecesIf you share 6 pieces, you share 6/12You share 4 pieces, you share 4/12You eat 3 pieces, you have 9/12 leftYou eat no pieces, you have 12/12 = 1
Equivalent FractionsEquivalent means “same” or “equal”Equivalent fractions are different fractions that are equalEx: 5/10 = 10/20Both numerator and denominator were doubled8/12 = 2/3Both numerator and denominator were divided by 4.
Equivalent Fractions Cont.
Relationship of Fractions1=1/1Cutting a fraction in half doubles the denominator.Half of 1=1/1 is ½Half of ½ is ¼Half of ¼ is 1/8
Relationship of Fractions Cont.A third of 1 is 1/3Half of 1/3 is 1/6Half of 1/6 is 1/12
Relationship of Fractions Cont.4/8 = ½. 3/8 is less than 4/8Therefore, 3/8 is less than ½2/4 = 4/8. ¾ is greater than 2/4Therefore, ¾ is greater than 4/8
Relationship of Fractions Cont.1/3 = 2/62/3 > 1/3. Therefore 2/3 > 2/62/6 = 4/125/6 > 2/6. Therefore 5/6 > 4/12
Fractions and MoneyWholes, Halves, and Fourths can be compared to money.A dollar can be thought as a whole.Half of a dollar is 50cents. 25cents =1/4Fractions are used everyday in life. =
Improper FractionsAn improper fraction is when the numerator is larger than the denominatorEx: 5/4; 6/4; 4/3Improper fractions are larger than 15/4 > 4/45/4 > 4/4 by ¼On a number line, 5/4 will be larger than 1
Improper Fractions and Mixed NumbersImproper Fractions can be put as mixed numbers.A mixed number is a whole number with a fraction added to it.1¼; 5½; 3 2/3 are all mixed numbers.5/4 = 4/4 + ¼4/4=1 so 5/4= 1+1/4= 1¼
Improper and Mixed Numbers Cont.15/5 = 5/5 + 5/5 + 5/55/5=1 so 15/5= 1+1+1Therefore, 15/5 as a mixed number is 3.9/6 = 6/6 + 3/66/6=1 and 3/6=1/2
Ordering FractionsPut these fractions from smallest to largest2/4; 3/8; 5/42/4=4/8 3/8<4/8 3/8<2/45/4 > 1 1>1/2The order is 3/8, 2/4, 5/4
Ordering Fractions Cont.Put in order from smallest to largest1 1/6; 5/3; 7/121 1/6 and 5/3 > 17/12 < 15/3= 1 2/3 = 1 4/6 1 4/6> 1 1/6The order is 7/12, 1 1/6, 1 2/3
ReviewWe learned how fractions relate to objects. We learned to find equivalent fractions. We learned the relationship of fractions with different denominatorsWe learned what improper fractions are and how to turn them into mixed numbers. We learned how to order fractions with different denominators.
