This document summarizes the results of a baseline survey on sesame trade arrangements, costs, and risks in Ethiopia. It finds that sesame is an important cash crop for smallholder farmers but they face issues throughout the supply chain. At the production level, farmers have low yields due to poor soil quality and lack of improved seeds. In marketing, farmers have little power in price negotiations with collectors and face high transaction costs due to travel time and costs. Collectors and exporters also have issues with quality control and managing relationships with farmers. Recommendations include improving seeds, market information access, supply chain governance, credit access, logistics and value addition to benefit all parties in the sesame supply chain.
