UNIT 12 - EXPLORING NEW WORDS SCIENCE 5th LEVEL THE CATHOLIC MONARCHS On the Iberian Peninsula, the Catholic Monarchs united the Crowns of Castille and Aragon and the new Crown was expanded with the Kingdom of Granada, the Kingdom of Navarre, the Canary Islands, Melilla and Oran. In order to unify all the inhabitants of the different Kingdoms, the Catholic Monarchs decided that one religion: Catholism. Jews and Muslims were forced to convert to Christianity or leave. The Jews were expelled in 1492. The Church used the Inquisition Court. CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS The Catholic Monarchs paid Christopher Columbus to travel in search of a new route. In 1492, he thought he was in Asia but he was in the Americas. Different scientific advances and inventions made it possible to discover new sea routes: the compass, the astrolabe, the caravel, etc. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Spain organised a series of expeditions to the Americas and conquered large parts of both continents. During 17th century, art and literature flourished in Spain. This period was known as the Golden Age. In the 18th century, the greatest exponent of Spanish painting was Francisco de Goya. THE ENLIGHTENMENT The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement that began in France in the 18th century and spread throughout Europe. Enlightened thinkers critised the absolute power of the monarch and the existence of privileged social classes.
