Fractions represent a part of a whole number.
Example 1: It is your friends birthday and you are all having cake. The cake is cut
into 12 slices and you all eat one slice each. What fraction of the cake did you eat?
Answer: 1
/12
Example 2: You are having pizza with friends, the pizza is cut into 8 slices
and you eat 3 slices. What fraction of pizza did you eat?
Answer: 3
/8
Now imagine you have to pay for your fraction of the pizza.

The top number on a fraction is called the .
numerator
denominato
r
total
The bottom number on a fraction is called the .
The denominator always represents the number of
parts.
F R AC T I O N S O F A N A M O U N T
What is of 30?
The denominator tells us how
many groups the number has
been split into.
In this case, 30 is split into 6
groups (30 ÷ 6).
Each group has 5 in it
F R AC T I O N S O F A N A M O U N T
What is of 30?
The numerator tells us how many
groups we need to count to work
out the answer.
In this case, we need to count 5
groups (5 x 5)
So 5
/6 of 30 = 25

To find fractions of an amount:
 Divide the amount by the denominator (bottom number)
 Multiple your answer by the numerator (top number)
Find 1
/6 of 36
36 ÷ 6 = 6
6 x 1 = 6
Answer: 6

It is important to know the method for finding
fractions of an amount (divide by the bottom,
times by the top) but it is also possible to work
these calculations out using a calculator.
Eg. Find 3
/5 of 60
Type into calculator: 3
/5 x 60
Answer: 36
