7 compelling innovative IoT applications
The 2008 Batman movie "Dark Knight" is still remembered because of its many contributions to
the superhero genre. The actors in this film are highly praised for their superb performances, the
most famous of which is the late actor Heath Ledger. In addition, the high-tech weapons in the
movie have also raised our expectations for action movies.
Although many of the techniques in the film seem to belong to the category of science fiction,
some of them have been realized. Among the innovations that have been realized, some
technologies are based on the Internet of Things (IoT).
In "The Dark Knight", Batman commissioned Lucius Fox to invent a technology that allows him to
monitor the entire city through a citizen's mobile phone. This technology allowed him to find bad
guys, but this caused people to worry about privacy, and eventually, the technology was
destroyed at the end of the film.
Today, the world is working hard to solve the privacy problem of IoT technology. The Internet of
Things is a system composed of interconnected computing devices, mechanical and digital
machines, objects, animals, and humans. The Internet of Things can transfer data without
human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction. Therefore, our world is more closely
connected than ever before.
Eventually, humanity will have to deal with social issues that are increasingly closely linked to us.
At the same time, IoT applications are helping to reduce counterfeiting, solve crimes, and save
lives. There is seven innovative Internet of Things applications covering a variety of human
experiences from work to entertainment.
1. Batman-like technology can help police fight crime
ShotSpotter uses advanced sensors, algorithms, and artificial intelligence systems to solve gun
violence nationwide. By analyzing the audio signal and pulse characteristics of potential gunshots
through software, the application can determine the location of the sounds received by the
sensors and determine whether they are gunshots. The app then sends alert notifications to law
enforcement and emergency response personnel.
The Internet of Things application is producing effects in multiple cities. In Oakland, California,
ShotSpotter claimed that from 2012 to 2017, the number of daily shootings decreased by 29%. In
Sacramento, this technology has apparently detected 1905 shooting incidents, resulting in 142
arrests. It is said that shootings in Rochester, New York have been reduced by 40%.
2. Give pregnant women peace of mind
Despite tremendous advances in medicine in recent years, many doctors still lack understanding
of pregnancy information. Premature birth is still the number one killer of children under five
years old, and the number of stillborn babies is ten times that of sudden infant death syndrome.
Medical staff and pregnant women need more information to prevent these complications.
This is where Bloomlife comes in. The company's intelligent pregnancy tracker and contraction
monitoring applications can allow medical staff to better understand the signs and symptoms
associated with pregnancy complications.

The IoT application automatically tracks and records the frequency, duration, and pattern of
contractions. This information is passed on to users and their doctors in real-time, providing a
possible way to reduce prenatal examinations — and the possibility of capturing certain
pregnancy complications before they become dangerous.
3. Curb opioid abuse
According to data from the US Department of Health and Human Services, 11.4 million people
abused opioids in 2016. As a result, 42,000 people died of an opioid overdose that year.
Smart pill bottles help solve the problem of opioid addiction. Pilleve vials can track patient
behavior to ensure a correct prescription. When patients feel pain, they can get their pills
through the Pilve app, which verifies their identity. Data about when to dispense pills will be
transmitted to medical professionals for monitoring.
4. Prevent counterfeiting
Counterfeit goods have become a major problem. The global counterfeit goods market is worth
more than $450 billion. In Europe, the apparel, footwear, and accessories industry loses about
$27.7 billion annually due to counterfeit goods.
"Authentic or Not" is a new IoT application that helps solve this problem. This technology uses
microchips in clothing to verify its authenticity. In order to verify the authenticity of the clothing,
consumers only need to point the smartphone at the clothing. These microchips also help
retailers track inventory. If goods are stolen, companies can disable these microchips to help
prevent them from being sold on the black market.
5. Simplify robot maintenance
According to a report by the International Federation of Robotics, the number of industrial robots
deployed globally this year will reach 2.6 million. ABB Robots is one of the world's leading
suppliers of industrial robots. The company has installed more than 400,000 robotic devices
worldwide, and now they are working hard to ensure that these robots have a longer lifespan
than humans.
ABB-connected sensors can monitor the maintenance needs of the robot, so the robot can tell its
owner when it needs attention. These sensors can be installed on the motors of any industrial
equipment, and the data they collect can help companies optimize performance and predict
maintenance needs.
This IoT innovation can also help companies reduce unplanned downtime, improve employee
safety and productivity, and reduce emissions and environmental impact.
6. Remote intimate interaction
Globally, there are 14 million couples in a long-distance relationship. However, nearly half of
these relationships will eventually end in a breakup. According to a recent survey by interactive
toy company Kiirroo, this is because long-distance relationships often lack physical intimacy.
Intimate toy companies like Kiiroo are helping couples overcome distance barriers through
innovative products. For example, Lovense offers a series of his and her Bluetooth toys. When
used by long-distance partners, these toys can simulate real-life intimate contact behavior in
real-time.
7. Make pedestrians safer

According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 5,987 pedestrians died in
the US in 2016 in traffic accidents. Crosswalks have been used to ensure pedestrian safety for
decades, but more than 100,000 pedestrians are still injured every year.
Starling Crossing intelligent sidewalk can distinguish pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles, and
determine the exact location, trajectory and speed of each road user to determine their next
course of action. For example, if a child suddenly runs into the middle of the road, a red arrow
will light up on the road at this time to determine its route, and a bright warning signal will be
issued on the road surface to remind drivers and cyclists.
Flexible Monetization of the Internet of Things
These applications represent only some products on the Internet of Things market. According to
the latest report from International Data Corporation, the Internet of Things market size is
expected to reach US$1.2 trillion in 2022. Another report from telecommunications company
Ericsson predicts that by 2022, approximately 18 billion IoT devices will be in use worldwide.
The business potential of the explosive growth of the Internet of Things is expected to be huge.
The Internet of Things and monetization opportunities based on usage models (or
consumption-based models) are a growing trend. (Source Internet of Things) This method of
charging customers based on customer usage or mixed models (such as usage and one-time fees)
can accelerate monetization and market entry opportunities.
The flexibility of IoT charging also benefits end users because they can be easily obtained at a
lower price. 7 compelling innovative IoT applications
