1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?

My cover doesn’t have as much writing and
information on as the professional one. I didn’t add
as much information to make it more stylish. I
wanted the front cover to be clean and
sophisticated instead of covering it with writing and
taking the focus off the main image of the new
music star. With the professional magazine, as the
cover star is well known, they can get away with a
close up serious joking picture, as people with
automatically recognise him and associate things to
                     him

The professional cover front image is different to
mine, as its more close up and serious, where as
mine is a mid close up with the front cover
person looking happy. This is to give the target
audience of my magazine a positive vibe, and
make them want to read it, where as ‘The
Source’ has a target audience of a much higher
age with much more known music stars so they
can get away with having images close up,
looking not bothered as the music stars attitude
is related to his music of rap, where as my
magazine is mainly indie music, and having my
cover star as moody wouldn’t have related to the
                    genre
The colour scheme used by the professional magazine is
much more used throughout the front cover whereas my
colour scheme is much more varied. This is because I
didn’t want to over use my colour scheme and cover the
whole of my magazine with it, as the reader may get
bored of it. However I feel that the other magazine can
get away with using the red colour scheme a lot as it
highlights a lot of important information for the reader,
and the target audience wouldn’t mind
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
                 Similarities
-Main image with writing underneath with info on
                the picture
                - page numbers in a similar colour, in sections
on what is new and what happens every week/
                month
                - titles are visible against the background and tie
in with the main colour scheme of the magazine

                  Differences
-Different font sizes, my magazine has a bold
large title to make it completely visible,
whereas the ‘Q’ magazine has gone for a
smaller, but just as bold, font.

-‘Q’ has gone into detail about the topics inside
the magazine whereas I just wrote the
                 headlines

-’Q’ has the date and issue number on the
inside, however I wrote mine on the front cover
and didn’t feel the need for it to be repeated.
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?

     Similarities Differences

-The professional magazine has more images
-Quotes from the interview used to get the than me, and their images capture the band at
readers attention their profession ; producing music, whereas my

- a big main image grabbing the readers in a normal manner.
attention about who the interview is about
- titles are visible against the background and tie - Their writing is bigger, and they haven’t wrote
in with the main colour scheme of the magazine as much as I did, however it gives the illusion
                                                      that they have

                                                      - The background colour is bold, and the
colours chosen can be seen well against it,
however mine doesn’t have a background
                                                      image.
2. How does your media product represent particular social
                           groups?
My music product was aimed towards indie
and hiphop fans. Indie music is a genre of
alternative rock and can be produced into
other sub-genres, including indie-pop. It
originates mainly from the UK and USA,
and is associated into many trends,
apperance and social groups.
The indie genre is mainly associated with
the age group 16 – 20, mainly males.
Their appearance is quite individual,
involving tight jeans, chinos, sweaters, In my magazine, I tried to portray this image
loose-fitting tops, snapback hats and vans. in my main image on the cover star in order
to appeal to the target audience. However, I
did try and make him appeal to the hip-hop
genre by adding in other notes, for example
on the contents page adding in the hiphop
                                              artist ‘Drake’.
I have represented many social groups by:
                                              Gender
                                              Latest trends
                                              Being individual
                                              Having confidence
3. What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?

• The kind of media production which may publish my media magazine is
Intermedia Partners. Intermedia Partners was founded in 1988, and has
invested in cable television, broadcast television, print, programming, and
broadband opportunities. InterMedia’s Senior Partners have over 50 years
of operating experience. They publish magazines such as Vibe. This
institution may distribute my magazine as it has a similar plan to Vibe, and
appeals to a wider target audience, which they may be after
4. Who would the audience be for your
                       media product?
                                                                     Snapback hats
The audience for my magazine would mainly be teenagers
aged 16 – 19 who are interested in indie/hiphop music.
I have tried to make my magazine aimed at a wide audience,
by aiming it towards different cultures instead of just one.
I also tried to aim my magazine towards both genders, by not
including colours which could be deemed as ‘sexist’ eg –
pink. The colours I used are quite neutral and appeal to
both genders in the age range 16 - 19
                                                                      Individual style

                     Cardigans/Sweaters
5. How did you attract/address your audience?

During my research, my audience said they wanted information on upcoming
events, such as festivals and gigs, an affordable price, a main cover star and an
appealing colour scheme. Here, you can see how I have taken that information into
account and applied it to my final magazine cover

Up and coming artists Big bold title to attract

Audience feedback
Liked about the magazine:
-The bold headlines and information throughout
- The use of images, well distributed
- The layout of the magazine looks professional

How to improve the magazine:
-Add more detail to the front cover
- More colour to be added
- A few more images on the doublepage article

For my audience feedback, I asked a group of people to fill
out a questionnaire about my magazine. From this, I found
out that most people thought my magazine was very good,
with 4 people rating it overall good. My contents page got the
highest rating, with everyone asked voting it as very good.
My double page spread got good due to the lack of colour,
images and there been too much writing for the reader to
want to read. My front cover got rated equally very good and
good, with the main comments being the likeness of the bold
headings and front cover image star, and negative comments
being that there is not enough information on it to portray
what is inside the magazine. Noone who I asked thought any
aspect of my magazine was poor or ok.
6. What have you learnt about technologies
from the process of constructing this
                      product?

together own magazine
Using Adobe

From using Abode Photoshop, I have managed to manipulate my cover image in the following ways:
-Adjust colour levels to make the photo stand out on the magazine cover
- Changed the brightness, hue and saturation to make the artist seem more alert
- Cropped the picture to make it look more professional
I done this to make the picture stand out more when it was being used. I didn’t want Ollie, the cover
star, to look washed out in yellow tones, so I felt the need to change it. I also cropped the image to
relate to the rule of thirds on my front cover, as it makes the magazine look more professional and the
image looks more in place.
Stages of development
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel
you have learnt in the progression from it to the full
                             product?
Preliminary Task

How to manipulate images on photoshop
Using InDesign to create my double-page article
Use of a camera and different angles/shots
Using a continuous colour scheme which will appeal to

  • 3. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My cover doesn’t have as much writing and information on as the professional one. I didn’t add as much information to make it more stylish. I wanted the front cover to be clean and sophisticated instead of covering it with writing and taking the focus off the main image of the new music star. With the professional magazine, as the cover star is well known, they can get away with a close up serious joking picture, as people with automatically recognise him and associate things to him The professional cover front image is different to mine, as its more close up and serious, where as mine is a mid close up with the front cover person looking happy. This is to give the target audience of my magazine a positive vibe, and make them want to read it, where as ‘The Source’ has a target audience of a much higher age with much more known music stars so they can get away with having images close up, looking not bothered as the music stars attitude is related to his music of rap, where as my magazine is mainly indie music, and having my cover star as moody wouldn’t have related to the genre The colour scheme used by the professional magazine is much more used throughout the front cover whereas my colour scheme is much more varied. This is because I didn’t want to over use my colour scheme and cover the whole of my magazine with it, as the reader may get bored of it. However I feel that the other magazine can get away with using the red colour scheme a lot as it highlights a lot of important information for the reader, and the target audience wouldn’t mind
  • 4. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Similarities -Main image with writing underneath with info on the picture - page numbers in a similar colour, in sections on what is new and what happens every week/ month - titles are visible against the background and tie in with the main colour scheme of the magazine Differences -Different font sizes, my magazine has a bold large title to make it completely visible, whereas the ‘Q’ magazine has gone for a smaller, but just as bold, font. -‘Q’ has gone into detail about the topics inside the magazine whereas I just wrote the headlines -’Q’ has the date and issue number on the inside, however I wrote mine on the front cover and didn’t feel the need for it to be repeated.
  • 5. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Similarities Differences -The professional magazine has more images -Quotes from the interview used to get the than me, and their images capture the band at readers attention their profession ; producing music, whereas my image is more plain and just captures the artist - a big main image grabbing the readers in a normal manner. attention about who the interview is about - titles are visible against the background and tie - Their writing is bigger, and they haven’t wrote in with the main colour scheme of the magazine as much as I did, however it gives the illusion that they have - The background colour is bold, and the colours chosen can be seen well against it, however mine doesn’t have a background image.
  • 6. 2. How does your media product represent particular social groups? My music product was aimed towards indie and hiphop fans. Indie music is a genre of alternative rock and can be produced into other sub-genres, including indie-pop. It originates mainly from the UK and USA, and is associated into many trends, apperance and social groups. The indie genre is mainly associated with the age group 16 – 20, mainly males. Their appearance is quite individual, involving tight jeans, chinos, sweaters, In my magazine, I tried to portray this image loose-fitting tops, snapback hats and vans. in my main image on the cover star in order to appeal to the target audience. However, I did try and make him appeal to the hip-hop genre by adding in other notes, for example on the contents page adding in the hiphop artist ‘Drake’. I have represented many social groups by: Gender Latest trends Being individual Having confidence
  • 7. 3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? • The kind of media production which may publish my media magazine is Intermedia Partners. Intermedia Partners was founded in 1988, and has invested in cable television, broadcast television, print, programming, and broadband opportunities. InterMedia’s Senior Partners have over 50 years of operating experience. They publish magazines such as Vibe. This institution may distribute my magazine as it has a similar plan to Vibe, and appeals to a wider target audience, which they may be after
  • 8. 4. Who would the audience be for your media product? Snapback hats The audience for my magazine would mainly be teenagers aged 16 – 19 who are interested in indie/hiphop music. I have tried to make my magazine aimed at a wide audience, by aiming it towards different cultures instead of just one. I also tried to aim my magazine towards both genders, by not including colours which could be deemed as ‘sexist’ eg – pink. The colours I used are quite neutral and appeal to both genders in the age range 16 - 19 Individual style Cardigans/Sweaters
  • 9. 5. How did you attract/address your audience? During my research, my audience said they wanted information on upcoming events, such as festivals and gigs, an affordable price, a main cover star and an appealing colour scheme. Here, you can see how I have taken that information into account and applied it to my final magazine cover Up and coming artists Big bold title to attract and festivals which the the audience with an audience want attractive name Dominant image fitting in with the target audience Prices which appeal of indie/hiphop, to the audience as it promoting the clothing are cheap New artists which people Colour scheme to are wanting to know appeal to both genders about
  • 10. How did you address your audience Large images on inside artists with page info Continuous colour underneath scheme which doesn’t go too out of line and isn’t too bold Clear and precise details on what inside and on what page without complicating things for the reader. Every week things and features on different sides of the page to simplify what Competitions included they’re looking for to see artists which are involved in the Variety of styles indie/hiphop vibe involved in the images which still relate to the audience style choice
  • 11. How did you address your audience Image which Plain background to relates to the front make the writing cover image so readable and to fit in the reader notices with the colour scheme the star which isn’t too over the top Bold title including Big image of the main subheadings with title wearing the One big long interview eyecatching quotes appropriate clothing of so that the reader from the interview my target audience, doesn’t have to read in with no other images to columns which could overfill the page, make them loose track simplicity of reading place
  • 12. Audience feedback Liked about the magazine: -The bold headlines and information throughout - The use of images, well distributed - The layout of the magazine looks professional How to improve the magazine: -Add more detail to the front cover - More colour to be added - A few more images on the doublepage article For my audience feedback, I asked a group of people to fill out a questionnaire about my magazine. From this, I found out that most people thought my magazine was very good, with 4 people rating it overall good. My contents page got the highest rating, with everyone asked voting it as very good. My double page spread got good due to the lack of colour, images and there been too much writing for the reader to want to read. My front cover got rated equally very good and good, with the main comments being the likeness of the bold headings and front cover image star, and negative comments being that there is not enough information on it to portray what is inside the magazine. Noone who I asked thought any aspect of my magazine was poor or ok.

  • 14. Using Adobe From using Abode Photoshop, I have managed to manipulate my cover image in the following ways: -Adjust colour levels to make the photo stand out on the magazine cover - Changed the brightness, hue and saturation to make the artist seem more alert - Cropped the picture to make it look more professional I done this to make the picture stand out more when it was being used. I didn’t want Ollie, the cover star, to look washed out in yellow tones, so I felt the need to change it. I also cropped the image to relate to the rule of thirds on my front cover, as it makes the magazine look more professional and the image looks more in place.
  • 16. 7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
