7 Point Evaluation By Beth Herries
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? My media product, challenges forms and conventions of real media products as it is giving the age range 16-19 years old target audience another option of magazine to be interested in. I think because my magazine is advertising indie music, that this age range will be more likely to pick up this magazine as it is relevant to this time. Also a lot of young people are very into what music is out there right now, and what is popular. I think this type of magazine is a development of a magazine focused on one particular style as his is a style that is very popular to youth culture at this time. By creating this magazine I am focused of getting the attention of a particular group of people, therefore this has affected some of my choices throughout making my media products.
How does your media product represent particular social groups? My media product represent particular social groups such as, the young generations. This is because the indie ‘look’ is a sub culture of this generation therefore this means that I will be targeting this particular group of people., this can be to do with own personal enjoyment, or to keep up with the latest indie music and create talking points in social situations. I think that my media product gives this social group what it needs to enjoy and keep up with the music that is being played now, and what is going on in the music business, also not all indie music is recognised in the charts, therefore this magazine give them the opportunity to highlight the bands that best represent indie music today and that aren’t as publically recognised.
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? I think that as my magazine is hitting a vast majority of the population, (16-19 year olds) and that a media institution with a lot of popularity and business backing would be best to distribute my media product. This is why I thing that a media institution such as Vivendi Universal would be a good choice to distribute my media product. Vivendi create a lot of films for the same age range and it is a media institution that everybody knows, and would be a very positive step forward for my media product as people would trust it as it is distributed by such a large media institution.
Who would be the audience for your media product? The audience for my media product would be for young people of the age 16-19. I think that this a good age to attract as, they are the ones who have grown up with this generations music and indie music is a big thing for this generation as it is conveyed in large social groups and cultures. So by getting this group of young people interested has cracked a lot of the most popular audience, who has the most interest in the indie music in the charts and out of the charts.
How did you attract/address your audience? I attracted my audience mostly by the front cover. Making it clear that this would involve the newest indie music, putting the names of well known artists and bands onto the cover and featured interviews inside to gain there attention to this media product. My image also shows eye contact with the reader and conveys a artist with the indie style and music. This will then draw my target audience to the cover and want to then buy it. I have also added a picture of the featured artist on the front of the magazine. The image is sophisticated, but the artist has a natural look and is within the same age as my target audience allowing them to be able to relate to the artist on the cover.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Throughout this process, I have learnt how to work a Mac, and some of the features of a Mac. Photoshop is one of the important things to know about when you are working to edit pictures for your front cover. I have learnt how to use Photoshop successfully and how to cut around photo’s by using the magic wand. Also on photo shop I learnt how to edit title’s to make them look professional enough to put into my media product. Also I have learnt how to use indesign, by learning how to add photo’s and titles, everything a good magazine needs, to create an effective magazine page, I am please with my final product as I has good media software that existing media companies use at the moment, therefore providing me with the chance to create something just as professional.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? I feel that I have learnt that it is important to make sure you know who you are directing your magazine too, if you are not clear on this your magazine will not be clear and will not attract the right audience this will make your media product unsuccessful . It is important that you make sure your image is both relevant to your target audience and the style of the magazine, this makes it look more attractive to the audience and will gain more attention as the target audience will be able to relate to it. I have also learnt to successfully use Photoshop and Indesign. Another important thing I feel I have learnt is that when you are creating a music magazine, a lot of planning is involved and you have to know what you are going to be doing and how, otherwise your magazine will end up untidy and unprofessional, I made sure that I did audience research to make sure I provided the best magazine for my youth audience.
