Chapter 8 – Functions and Graphing 8.3 – Graphing Linear Equations Using Intercepts
The graph of a linear function may cross either the  x -axis, the  y -axis, or both axes.
Intercepts The  x -intercept  is the  x -coordinate of the point where the graph crosses the  x -axis. The  y -intercept  is the  y -coordinate of the point where the graph crosses the  y -axis.
Identify the x- and y-intercepts.
The  y -intercept and  x -intercept can be used to graph a linear equation. To find the  x -intercept, let  y  = 0 in the equation and solve for  x . To find the  y -intercept, let  x  = 0 in the equation and solve for  y .
Find the  x -intercept and the  y -intercept for each equation.  Then graph the equation. x  + 2 y  = 4  y  = 3 x  - 6
Some linear equations have just one variable.  Their graphs are horizontal or vertical lines.
