This document summarizes the different types of hypersensitivity reactions: Type II cytotoxic hypersensitivity involves antibody-mediated cell lysis, Type III toxic complex hypersensitivity involves immune complex deposition, Type IV T-cell mediated delayed type hypersensitivity involves T-cell activation and cytokine release, and Type V stimulatory hypersensitivity involves autoantibody binding to cellular receptors mimicking ligands. Examples are provided for each type including blood transfusion reactions, serum sickness, contact dermatitis, and thyroid stimulating antibody. The mechanisms and pathologies of each reaction are concisely described.
