Operating Goals Build a national network of funders who support proven, evidence-based programs Support the study, research and collaboration needed to refine and improve practices and polices Advocate for the increase of local, state and national resources
Long Term Goals Create the systems change needed to end homelessness for 2 million Americans Raise and leverage at least $100 million for housing and services by the end of 2010 Create 90,000 more units of supportive housing by 2014 (60,000 of the overall goal of 150,000 have already been developed)
Funding Principles Homelessness in America is unacceptable, and it is solvable. We know that adequate, affordable and accessible housing is the solution. We know that quality housing with supportive services can get our most vulnerable homeless families and individuals out of shelters and off the streets and change their lives. Please read the following principles and strategies for suggestions for how funders can get involved.
Principle 1 Housing is the key Promote housing-based solutions with access to appropriate services, that are integrated into our communities, as the primary investment for ending homelessness.
Principle 2 Recruit partners - make deals Initiate and collaborate through strategic partnerships among funders, local policymakers, business leaders, and government, as well as advocacy, housing and service providers.
Principle 3 Think upstream Support effective prevention programs and strategies, such as discharge planning, employment training, substance abuse and mental health counseling, and family reunification efforts.
Principle 4 Share the vision Raise awareness of homelessness and help implement existing local ten year plans to end homelessness, while building public will for long-term strategies locally and nationally.
Principle 5 Build a bank of knowledge Encourage and support research, demonstration projects, and data collection to identify and confirm evidence-based approaches for serving the homeless population.
Principle 6 Be an agent for change Promote needed systems change, including increased coordination across government departments and agencies and efforts to transition providers from shelter-based to housing first models.
Principle 7 Follow the money Work actively to leverage national policy and financial support for these efforts.
