- 2. Meet the Cultural Health Team Laura Barson- is the administrative support for Cultural Health Initiatives in the Cleveland Office. She is also responsible for the Speaker’s Bureau and Volunteer Management. She has a degree in Marketing from Miami University and has worked for the American Heart Association for almost 3 years. Laura is a native of Cleveland. She is also an active member of the Forum for Volunteer Administrators, in order to professionally develop her skills and management of volunteers. Yvonka Marie Hal l is Northeast Ohio Director of Cultural Health Initiatives for the American Heart Association. In this role, she creates cutting-edge programs to reduce the incidence of heart disease and stroke in underserved communities. In 2005, Hall was recognized by her peers and was awarded the American Heart Association’s Diversity IMPACT Award for her innovative community-based heart disease and stroke initiatives. Last year, Yvonka earned national acclaim and was selected by General Mills as one of five women to receive Cheerios’ Sisters Saving Hearts Award . In support of this recognition, she received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congresswomen Stephanie Tubbs-Jones. She was recognized in the February, 2008 edition of Ebony magazine for her commitment to educating African American women of their risk factors for heart disease. Yvonka was recently selected as a 2008 honoree for the Speaking of Women’s Health – Universal Sisters Program for her dedication and commitment to improving the overall health, well-being and personal safety of women in her community. Yvonka was recently inducted into Who’s Who in Black Cleveland. She also received an award of recognition from Pine Sol for their Powerful Women Making a Difference and the Tom Joyner Morning Show for The Hardest Working Community Educator . Yvonka is passionately involved with the Cleveland community. She’s a current member of the National Council of Negro Women, Cleveland Branch NAACP, Minority Health Alliance, and the Ward 1 HEAL Community Health Initiative. Yvonka is also involved in national organizations including the National Association for Chronic Disease Directors Cultural Competency Committee, and as a Wellness Consultant for the Black Women’s Health Imperative in Washington, DC. Yvonka is a graduate of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Notre Dame College of Ohio. Additionally, she is a graduate of Leadership Cleveland. As a child, Yvonka witnessed her father murder her mother. She along with her three younger brothers and a younger uncle were raised by her maternal grandparents. This tragedy, turned triumph, fuels her community commitment and devotion to raising her son Samario Antoine, 10 and instilling in him the importance of education.

- 7. 07-08 Power Events African American Family Wellness Walk A unique community-based event that combines physical activity, heart attack and stroke risk screenings and family fun, while raising awareness of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. September 22, 2007 . Over 2500 attended. Sisters of Power An educational luncheon designed to raise awareness among African American women of their risks for heart disease and stroke. This event was held at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven on April 19, 2008. Over 430 women attended. Power Sunday A National Observance held on the first Sunday of May during National Stroke Month. This program recognized African-Americans that have survived or died of stroke and seeks to raise the awareness of the devastating impact of stroke within the African-American community.
- 8. 07-08 Power Events Taste of Power Community Event Local caterers prepared a variety of heart-healthy dishes utilizing the American Stroke Association’s Soul Food Cookbook. The Greater Cleveland community was invited to partake in the delicious heart healthy delicacies and celebrate their Power to eat healthy. Over 400 community members participated in this event held at the American Heart Association on May 17, 2008 T aste of Power Ambassador Reception A sophisticated event to network and celebrate local successes of Power Cleveland. The event was held at 2020 Mocha Fusion Café Lounge on May 17, 2008. Hosted by Television personality Cynthia Barnes. Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to Taste. Toast. and Mingle.
- 10. 07-08 Faith-Based Programs Have Faith in Heart Sunday A national observance held on the first Sunday of February during American Heart Month. This program encourages women to take action to reduce their risk for heart disease. Organizations set aside a day of their choice during the month of February to wear red and raise the awareness of our number one killer. Search Your Heart Sunday/ Go Healthy Monday An observance set aside for any day in March during Nutrition Month, encouraging organizations to host their own event by addressing key health issues related to heart disease in high-risk communities.
