THE ROLE OF IRONY
IN OUR DAILY LIFE
OVERVIEW
■ INTRODUCTION OF IRONY
■ TYPES OF IRONY
■ VERBAL IRONY
■ DRAMATIC IRONY
■ SITUATIONAL IRONY
■ CONCLUSION
INTRODUCTION OF IRONY
 Irony is when the reality of something is different to the
expectation. In simple words irony is the opposite of what is
expected. Irony is used both in real life and in literature. If we
are to write a story, we can use irony to create empathy,
suspense, romantic tension, comedy, etc. In our daily life,
sometimes we say somethings that we don’t mean. This is also
a type of irony. If we think carefully, we can realize how much
irony is used all around us. So, it’s safe to say that irony is a
crucial part of our daily life.
TYPES OF IRONY
• There are three types of irony.
 VERBAL IRONY
 DRAMATIC IRONY
 SITUATIONAL IRONY
VERBAL IRONY
 Verbal irony is an expression that is used for
expressing the opposite if it’s literal meaning. Verbal
irony occurs when we realize that someone means
something other than what he or she is actually saying.
In simple term verbal irony is when someone says one
thing but means the opposite. Sarcasm is the most
extreme and obvious form of verbal irony.
TYPES OF VERBAL IRONY
 SARCASM
 UNDERSTATEMENT
 OVERSTATEMENT
 SOCRATIC IRONY
EXAMPLES OF VERBAL IRONY
I. In summer time, when the electricity goes out and we say, “I am
feeling cold all of a sudden.”
II. When a teacher announces a sudden exam and someone says, “I
couldn’t have been more excited.”
III.When your internet dies in the middle of an online exam and you
say, “Oh, Great! I’m going to get the best marks on the exam.”
IV. After getting a bad haircut someone says, “You look nice with your
new haircut.”
V. When we accidently put sugar instead of salt in a dish, the person
eating the food says, “The food is a bit salty today.”
DRAMATIC IRONY
 Dramatic irony occurs when the audience or readers
know more about a situation than the character does. In
simple term dramatic irony is when you know something
about a story that a character doesn’t know. We are faced
with a lot of dramatic irony in our day to day life. When
we read a story or watch a movie, we have more
knowledge about the story than the character. This is
called dramatic irony.
STAGES OF DRAMATIC IRONY
INSTALLATION
EXPLOITATION
RESOLUTION
EXAMPLES OF DRAMATIC IRONY
I. In a movie a character kills his friend and then hid his body into the
woods. We know where the body is but other character in the movie
doesn’t know.
II. In the tv show ‘The Office’, we know that Jim Halpert is the main
character of the show but he doesn’t know that.
III. When one of your classmate got the highest marks in an exam by
cheating and no one in the class knows about it except you.
IV. If a person steals an item from a store thinking that no one saw him, but
the store clerk saw the whole thing in security camera.
V. When a person secretly writes a letter for his crush and puts the letter
into her bag thinking that she was away. But his crush saw him put the
letter into her bag.
SITUATIONAL IRONY
Situational irony occurs when events turn out
differently than characters or the audience expected.
Situational irony is when something about the situation
is completely unexpected. We encounter situational
irony in our daily life quite often. In our daily life
when we expect something but a total opposite
happens, that’s called situational irony.
TYPES OF SITUATIONAL IRONY
 COSMIC IRONY
 POETIC IRONY
 STRUCTURAL IRONY
 HISTORICAL IRONY
EXAMPLES OF SUTUATIONAL IRONY
I. When you are trying to avoid a water gun fight and
then you accidentally fall into a puddle.
II. A doctor who has trypanophobia.(Trypanophobia is
the fear of needles)
III.A math teacher who is bad at multiplying numbers.
IV.A 24/7 shop is closed after 10 pm.
V. When a car mechanic does not know how to fix a flat
tire.
CONCLUSION
 Irony plays an important role in every student’s life. If we
were to write a story, we need to use irony to create comedy,
suspense, thriller or romantic tension in our story. We often
use irony to express the felling of irritation, displeasure or
pity. Sometimes we use sarcasm which is also a type of irony.
Therefore, we can describe irony as an irreplaceable figure of
speech that we use in our daily life.
