This document presents a comparison of paper-based annotations versus online annotations in a workplace setting. It begins with an introduction and overview of annotations and their role in learning. It then discusses different types of annotations based on their form and function. Challenges of online annotations are outlined, such as a lack of physical tangibility compared to paper. The document describes a study that was conducted, including an online annotation study using a tool called SpreadCrumbs and a field study of common paper-based annotation habits. The results provide insights into how to better support active reading and annotations in digital contexts.
