This document discusses selecting the most efficient steaming speed for container ships in the liner shipping industry. It presents a decision making method called FTOPSIS (Fuzzy-TOPSIS) that combines fuzzy set theory and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). The FTOPSIS method evaluates alternatives based on technical, financial, environmental and commercial criteria to determine the optimal steaming speed. Applying this method to a case study, extra slow steaming between 17-19 knots was found to be the most efficient speed. The document provides background on factors like the economic recession that have impacted ship operating costs and reviews different levels of steaming speeds used in the industry.
