Sammy is a checkout clerk at a supermarket who notices three young women enter in summer dresses. He objectifies the women and comments on their appearances. When the store manager confronts the women for their revealing outfits, Sammy quits his job in solidarity. He realizes the social class differences between himself and the women. Sammy feels remorse for objectifying them and knows his rebellious actions will make his future more difficult.

- 5. What did you think about the girls? Was Mr. Lengel right or wrong? Why do you think so? Why did Sammy quit? Was it a genuine action?
- 6. What kind of person is Sammy in the beginning of the novel? List words and phrases he uses to describe the girls: “ sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it” (15). “ do you really think it’s a mind in there or just a little buzz like a bee in a glass jar?” (16). “ with the straps pushed off, there was nothing between the top of the suit and the top of her head except just her , this clean bare plane…it was more than pretty” (16). “ Darling,” I said. “Hold me tight” (16).

When my parents have somebody over they get lemonade and if it’s a real racy affair Schlitz in tall glasses with ‘They’ll Do It Every Time’ cartoons stenciled on” (18).
