A2 Media Studies Research and Planning
Introduction In this powerpoint I shall go through the many things that I have learnt about the films and how they are structured through the textual analysis I have done in terms for the same genre as my short film.
Genre + Narrative What I have learnt about Genre and Narrative from the short films that I have analysed has made me learn that it is hard to apply some genres to a short film and therefore restricts the amount of things you can do so that the short film stays a short film. To follow a storyline or narrative is to make sure whatever film you are making of whatever genre it may be that it makes sense to the viewer otherwise confusion can happen and it could make no sense. Also another good idea is to make sure that you don’t go on for to long and that the main action happens fast and you don’t lose the audiences attention.
Mise en Scene Mise en Scene wasn’t a difficult one for me to understand because of the simple categories that Mise en Scene fits into because I make a list of things whenever I have to analyse a film or if i'm writing my own. The groups are Costume Lighting Acting Makeup Props And Setting Each of these are key to the Mise en Scene what ever you are doing.
Mise en Scene what I've learnt What I have learnt in Mise en Scene is that how difficult it is to be able to get this part of filming right because when you are filming you have to make sure that each prop and costume has to be right and I have found it hard to notice the surroundings rather than just focusing on the subject. Also my aim has been to make the costume look convincing to the viewer because without a convincing costume and something that represents the character then I don’t have a film instead I have a massive confusion.
Camera Camera is all about memorising the types, angle and distance of shots in an exam or having a list in front of you whenever you are analysing an film for an essay or if you are currently writing your own. Camera isn't easy because you have to use a lot of different ones to be able to get the right amount of shots that’s required for a film which in other words you need to give a range of different ones.
Camera what I’ve learnt What I have learnt with the camera during the course of the last year is that with a camera and a film continuity is key so that something random doesn’t happen whilst filming is taking place, this is rather difficult for me because looking at a scene a trying to make sure something random hasn’t moved is hard because I sometimes don’t notice. Camera is hard to use in my experience because to find the best angle to use for each shot is not the easiest thing to do because it can take me ages until I find the best one and then I can apply it to my film. I have learnt that to find the best shot that you have to be patient with your work.
Editing Editing isn't the easiest to get because it requires how a shot changes to something else whether it cuts, wipes or fades but it is always important to make sure that you use the right one for the right situation. Also within editing you need to follow the 180 and 30 degree rule so that you don’t end up confusing the audience.
Editing what I’ve learnt I have learnt that there isn't a lot to talk about editing because in my point of view it is the hardest to explain and apply to a film. To me each rule with editing is difficult to choose what you want to add to a film such as wipe, fade or cut because for me it is sometimes hard to choose the right one for the right moment. The 180 degree rule I have thought to be an easy thing to follow because as long as I always think to stay on one side the room I don't end up breaking it which is probably the most easiest rule for me to follow in terms of media.
Relationship between Acting + Performance The relationship between the acting and performance mutually sounds the same because you can be acting in something or you could be performing something. The only thing that matters though is that they are done and done well so that we gain marks for performance which is why I spend time going through the script with my actors so that they can say there lines properly and how they would act on the environment that they are in.
Representation / Messages I realise in films that each character has his own way of doing things and his own way of portraying himself to the audience in order to let us know within the storyline that what he does we should consider if it is the right thing to do or the wrong thing to do, which then leads us to learn from someone's mistakes or to learn from someone's achievements.
Representation / Messages what I’ve learnt The messages in a film I have learnt is what the storyline of a film is telling us and how we respond from other people triumphs or mistakes. to create a plot in a storyline is in my opinion a pretty fun thing to do and is the highlight of a any film because twists are included in this and is usually what tells you their maybe a second film or third. A representation of a film is not the easiest thing to do in my experience because being able to compare characters to the way that they act in within there age and how they act for example a forty year old adult acting like a five year old. As an example of a TV programme I have seen which I could see to be odd would little britain since they have the most weirdest of characters doing the most random of things.
Conclusion In conclusion the things that have been drilled in my head in the last year that include camera, mise en scene, genre and narrative, editing and the messages and representation of a film from which I will need to apply for another year of schooling in order to maintain my grade or be able to increase it.
