- 1. Genre music video analysis By Luca Riccio
- 2. Introduction • The genre that I am going to analyze is pop and the music video that I have chosen for this task is justin timberlake- suit and tie
- 3. 2: What is the genre of the music video? The way you can tell this music video fits the genre pop is by the costume they are wearing the artist is wearing a suit and tie which is what the song is called, this costume is very popular at the moment in fashion. This could help me with my music video because I will know what kinds of costumes I must use when making my music video. A visual element that helps tell us that it’s a pop video is the dancers in the background behind JT, this tells us it is a pop video as it is a convention of a pop video. This could help me when making my video so when I start to film my video I can find out what the conventions are for this genre.
- 4. 3.Analyse the setting and décor of the music video. The setting at the start of the video shows JT in his living room on his piano which shows he must be wealthy. It also represents the lifestyle he’s living in a big house with expensive décor such as chair with expensive materials, girls massaging his back etc. This can help me when making my video as I will know which is the right setting for this genre and it will follow the conventions of this genre. The reason why the director may have chose the setting and décor like this is to show what life would be like if you were rich and famous and he wants the audience to put themselves in JT place. The setting help show that the video is pop because it’s very modern and the narrative of the video fits in with the genre as it shows the lifestyle of a rich person and helps get across to the audience that everyone has a dream.
- 5. 4.Analyze the costumes of the music videos The costume and clothing that JT is wearing fits in with the genre pop as it is very fashionable and popular with people and it could suggest he is very wealthy. This could help when deciding what costumes would be right for my video and what is conventional in this genre. The dancers behind JT are also wearing suits shows they are with him and shows that it’s very popular with everyone. The director has chose this costume for JT so it shows what the fashion and what the most popular thing to wear is at the moment within fashion and the suits represent the narrative in that when you’re wealthy this is what your life could be like. The artist is dressed different to the characters in the scene where he is in the recording studio, he is dressed in a shirt and waist coast and the people playing the instrument are dressed casual t-shirt and jeans. Which shows he is the important person in the scene/ video and helps the audience know that. This can help me with my video in that when deciding what costumes to pick for my video I can also look at what it can show and represent in my video.
- 6. 5. Analyze the props in the music video • The piano has been used as a prop in this music video. It could connote his passion for music which also links well because he is a singer and it could represent a passion he has for playing it. The director has chose the piano as a prop because it shows that he’s playing it which shows he likes music which goes well because he’s the artist in the video. He also uses the piano to represent a passion that JT has in the video and helps the audience understand what he has a passion for. Another prop that he chose was the microphone and the stand that JT uses when he’s singing and dancing, he has used this prop in this video because he helps us know that he’s the singer and he’s the main person in the video.

Analyze the body language and movement in the music video In this music video on the right JT body language and movement shows he is the main character and singer as he is placed at the front. The director has chose JT to move and stand like that because he wants to people to know who the main person in the video is and the body language tells us he is the one singing as he has his arms out. This fits In with the genre as a convention of a pop genre is a the artist singing is at the front to help the audience know who the artist is. The dancers are placed behind him which suggests they are dancing with him but JT is in front.
- 8. 7. Performance The artist in the music video plays an important role. The way we can tell he is playing an important role is through the video the camera is focused on him which tells the audience that he is the artist. Furthermore the position he is standing shows when the dancers are behind show he is the important and is the main person. This is important when making my video that I make it clear who the artist is and how I make him important in the video. The performance of the artist adds a jazzier edge to the pop video with the dancing and the smart suits.
- 9. 8. Narrative In this music video there is a narrative, JT the artist takes part in the narrative. The lyrics link with the narrative in the story as the lyric ‘I be on my suit and tie’ links with the narrative as he is wearing a suit and tie in the video. The narrative helps the audience know what the song is about and lyrics link with the narrative. This could be helpful when making my music video because I can take some lyrics in the song I choose to use and link it into my video so it helps audience understand the music video.
