PRELIMINARY TASK
RECREATE A MUSIC VIDEO AND
LIP SYNCING TASK
Our preliminary task consisted of Sascha Richards and I to recreate a music
video of an artist of our choice and recreate it shot for shot. We also had to
incorporate lip syncing into our task. We found the task to be fun to complete
as we chose a very energetic song and video to reproduce we had to be very
experimental with our directing and filming skills. This task helped us expand
our film making skills as I have previously mentioned we used new techniques
we had never used before and hopefully we will be able to use these skills in
producing our actual music video. We chose the song Foundations by Kate
Nash as it is established to be a quirky music video and we found that we
wanted our preliminary task to be more difficult to create so we would have
the knowledge later on in our own production process.
INTRODUCTION
This shot was the first shot of
both music videos so we had to
replica the shot exactly to make
sure our preliminary video
flowed like the original. We
found that we had to cut each
shot on the beat of the track to
make it flow fluently with the
first few seconds. With the prop
shots it was quite easy as we
only had to film a still prop for a
few minutes. But for shots like
the bowling ball knocking over
the shoes we found we had to
take many shots to get the
angles right as we wanted to
match shot for shot.
When it came to the lip-
syncing section of the task
we found we had to
constantly compare our
work with the actual music
video, due to the camera
shots. In Kate Nash’s music
video we found the camera
cut off her faces at some
points so we had to make
sure our shots matched hers.
We also had to make sure
the actors in the video
mirrored her body language
and tried to mirror her facial
expressions.
We found trying to match the first shot of lip syncing for the beginning of the music
video was hard as we had to also mirror Kate Nash’s movements and actions. But what
went to our advantage was that the actress knew all the lyrics to the song so we were
able to take a continuous shot of her lip-syncing and we were able to use these
throughout the task and it made the video consistent throughout.
Shots like this one took some creativity to re-create as we had dispose the use of a
tripod and film this free hand and place the camera on the floor to keep the shot
steady. However we found this shot one of the easiest to replicate due to the fact we
just had to choreograph the actresses feet movement. It was also quite humorous and
fun as we were able to take many shots and experiment.
This part of the preliminary task was the hardest to recreate as we were
unable to film this shot. This shot consisted of continually taking pictures and
moving the props a little at a time. The editing needed for this shot took the
majority of our time as we had to make sure the sequence was in sync with
the original video but also we had to keep it in time with the original video
and matched the lyrics.
Overall I found that our preliminary task was good as we matched the
majority of our shots with the original shots. The only problems we
encountered was that we didn’t match all of the camera angles accurately or
we misinterpreted some of the shots. If we could recreate the preliminary task
I would make sure we followed our story board to the word so we could make
sure all of the shots matched.
