This document provides an introduction to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and how to teach students who communicate with technology. It discusses the basics of communication development and defines three levels of communicative ability. AAC can improve communication for students with impairments and involves any method that enhances communication effectiveness. An AAC evaluation assesses a student's abilities and challenges to determine appropriate assistive technology strategies. The goal is to support students in communicating their unique perspectives. Flexibility is important, using a multimodal approach and tailoring the communication method to the situation. Learning AAC requires seeing the tool as an extension of one's communication abilities.
