10 main tips for character design
1- What is the goal of character design, where do you want to use your character?
First principle of character design: knows your audiences. For instance if your audiences are in
the age group of 3-5 several important points should be considered: type of designing, line
simplicity (not using too much curved or broken lines), flat coloring without using shadows and
understandability.
Second principle is the usage of designing, as you know there are several usage of character
designing is possible it is very important to know where your designs will be used for. Do you
want to use it for advertising, books, animations…?
2- Do some research:
Research about all different characters according to the previous tip. Today you can access
thousand of websites easily so you can see all successful and unsuccessful designs. Study these
character designs and think about what makes some successful and what in particular you like
about them.
3- Design distinctly:
Whether you're creating a prince or monster, you can guarantee there are going to be a
hundred other similar creations out there. Your character design needs to be strong and
interesting in a visual sense to get people's attention. Your design should be specific for the
people and try not to repeat previous designs. You can use specific color, specific texture and
specific shapes.

You can use different lines with different weights (thin, thick, even, round, soft lines) to fully
describe your characters according to your subject. For example:
For designing angry and awe characters with negative behavior using thick lines in dark colors
could totally help you of your purpose. You can also use rhythmic lines with texture.

Using exaggeration for your main character is crucially important; it will help your characters
appear larger than life. Exaggerated features will also help viewers to identify the character's
key qualities. You can exaggerate by using different colors, lines and position According to
purpose of character design.
6- Color:
Using proper color for characters can help audiences to communicate a character's personality.
Usually For positive character we use light colors (especially warm colors) and for negative
characters we use cool colors. Colors help us to show our characters nature much easier.
7- Using details and Accessories:
Details can provide specification of our character; You can specify characters by assigning a hat
or a neck less. Once you give your character things to wear and interact with, it starts to come to
life. You can also use those details for deigning background and layout.
8- Put your character in Script:
First imagine your character in different situations in different poses. Besides the mentioned
element the place, the lights and especially the story must be credible. Lights can induce both
fear and happiness in different situations.
9- love and communicate your character:
Love and communicate you design, put in several position in your story, if the character is hero
make it the hero if the character is important show its importance. Put yourself in her/his shoes
and act. Don't be afraid to experiment and ignore all the rules and tips about planning and
crafting the look of your character design. Going against what is supposed to be the right way of
doing something could create unexpected and exciting results.
10- Advise with others:
After designing show your friends and family your character and see their reactions. They are
the representative of the people and if you want to be succeeded they need to communicate
with your designed character. No designer should ever trust his/her design 100% and always
use people comment so he/she can pave his/her way to success.

3 types of methods of how can we create a character?
First:
Close your eyes and listen to your favorite music, scrawl without think about your subject and what you
really want to draw. Don’t fill your whole paper cause you need create your character by using this
scrawl. Open your eyes and see your scrawl. How do you feel about your drawing? Now think about
your subject that you want to create character for it and look at your scrawl. You can see your character
among your scrawl, all you need to do is to use some imagination.
Second:
Draw lines un-purposely with closed eyes. Move your pen or your pencil smoothly on the paper,
sometimes use pressure when you draw lines. Use continues lines at all time. Now you can open your
eyes and explore your drawing try to find shapes in your drawing.
Third:
Draw several colorful shapes (circles, rectangular, triangles…) in your paper. Make sure that these
shapes are not interrupted each others. After finishing your drawing you have plenty of colorful shapes
that can help you in creating your character.
