ADA’S STORY
Ada speaks for herself...
Introducing Ada
Ada is an 85 year old widow, who
lives alone in a 200 year old 2-
bedroomed cottage in a small village
in the Scottish Highlands.
She has lived in the cottage for many
years, and as she is unable to take on
much maintenance work, it is
becoming cold, damp and draughty.
Introducing Ada
Although isolated from her family and
many facilities (e.g. the nearest
hospital is 30 miles away), Ada does
not feel this is a problem.
She describes herself as ‘fit as a
fiddle’; and proudly notes that she has
never had to be admitted into hospital
in her life.
After she fell at home, however,
Ada’s family have become very
concerned about her health, and
are urging her to move into
supported housing in Airdrie.
They feel that, at her age, she
should be able to access support
more easily; and that she seems
to be a lot frailer since her
husband died last year.
Ada’s Family
As she has been very
resistant to leaving her
home, Ada’s daughter has
asked Social Services to
visit her to look at ways to
make her safer there.
Ada, however, has stated
that she does not want
them to provide her with
any equipment.
She believes that the
introduction of technology
would make her feel that
she has lost her
independence.
