Peculiar Causes
Riders, compared to drivers, get more easily tired and, like them, can be distracted. Main factors
are:
• Direct exposure to the environment (temperature, humidity, atmospheric agents, noise,
vibrations, aerodynamic protection)
• Physical effort connected to the task of riding
More Serious Effects
Riders are less protected in case of crashes
Goals:
• Integrate monitoring sensors in the protective gear without affecting comfort
• Develop algorithms able to detect physical fatigue, distraction and, optionally, stress
• Create a HMI strategy that:
› assists the rider during long tours
› effectively incites the rider to stop when his/her state gets critical
• Develop safe active strategies to be used when the situation gets safety critical

Data Collection

• Target: gather data to
• Compare sensors integrated in the protective gear with reference
sensors
• Develop detection/prediction algorithms
• When: December 2017 – January 2018
• Place: CERTH premises, Thessaloniki
• Tests: mainly on simulator (easier to control the different
parameters and have a medical supervision), ride on public
roads was used to induce fatigue
• Visual distraction test
• Mental workload/stress test
• Physical fatigue (thermal comfort + muscular fatigue)
