Adding and Subtracting Like Fractions 11/30/09
With Like Denominators When you are adding or subtracting fractions, you must always have a common denominator (the bottom numbers on each fraction have to be the same).
With Like Denominators As long as the denominators are the same, just add or subtract the top numbers (leave the denominators ALONE!).  Then simplify as necessary.   The denominators are the same, so subtract the top numbers. 2-1=1, so your answer is
With Whole Numbers and Fractions When you’re adding and subtracting with whole numbers, you have to make the whole number a fraction.  Remember that putting the whole number over 1 does not change the value of the whole number, so that’s where you need to start!
With Whole Numbers and Fractions 4 -  Put the whole number over 1, then make the denominators the same by multiplying the top and bottom by the denominator of the other fraction (in this case, 8).  Now our problem reads…
Now, I simply subtract and simplify.  32 – 1 = 31, and  is an improper fraction.  I want  to make that a mixed number, so I’ll divide 31 by 8 and keep simplifying until I’m done!
With Mixed Numbers Focus on the whole numbers first.  Add or subtract those, then deal with your fractions just like you did before; simplifying as necessary.
