Addition of itegers
• What are integers?
• An integer (pronounced IN-tuh-jer) is a whole number
(not a fractional number) that can be positive,
negative, or zero.
• Which letter is used to denote set of integers?
Z
• Arrange the following in increasing order.
-3 , 4, -2, 2, 0
Increasing order: -3, -2, 0, 2
• Differentiate between positive and negative integers.
Questions
Addition of itegers
In today class, we will leant about
RULES For
1. Adding integers with the same sign
2. Adding integers with different signs
Objectives
RULE 1
( +5 ) + (+7)
= + 12
Or
( 5 ) + (7) = 12
RULE 1: a) The sum of two
positive integers is always positive.
If the
Beginning
signs are
Then the
Calculation
we do is….
The End Sign
of our
answer
Example
SAME
ADD SAME + 3 ++1 = +4
+ 3 +1
b) The sum of two negative integers
is always negative.
If the
Beginning
signs are
Then the
Calculation
we do is….
The End Sign
of our
answer
Example
Same ADD Same -3 -1 = -4
-3 -1
RULE 2
(- 20) + (-5)
= - 25
• If the numbers you are adding have
different signs, subtract the smaller
number from the larger number, then
determine which number is larger.
• The sign (positive or negative) of the answer
will be the sign of the larger number.
If the numbers have different signs
If the Beginning
signs are
Then the
Calculation
we do is….
The End Sign
of our
answer
Example
Different SUBTRACT The Sign of
the Larger Number
+3 -1 = +2
-7 +5
-7 + 5 = -2
