The PHTLS “Family” AFFILIATE FACULTY Representative of the State Coordinator Selected by each state’s Coordinator Approved by the PHTLS Chairperson Approved to run all PHTLS courses; must be present for all Instructor Courses and monitor first-time Course Coordinators Extensive experience teaching PHTLS May be long-term or one-time appointment Member of the NAEMT

The PHTLS “Family” LOCAL HOST ORGANIZATION Sponsors PHTLS courses Local responsibilities: classroom, safe working area  for skills, equipment, etc. Financial accountability

The PHTLS “Family” COURSE MEDICAL DIRECTOR Must be a physician At least an ATLS ®  provider (preferably an ATLS ®  instructor) Available during the program (if not on site, available by phone)

The PHTLS “Family” PHTLS INSTRUCTORS Current provider and completion of instructors’ course Must be observed by Affiliate Faculty or appointee within 1 year of completing the instructors’ course Valid for 4 years Must instruct in 4 courses during valid period Must attend an approved Instructor Update with the release of each subsequent PHTLS edition
The PHTLS “Family” ADJUNCT FACULTY Specialty Instructors: physicians, nurses, other ancillary medical professionals, educators May deliver lectures May assist in instructing in  Teaching  Skill Stations, if: PHTLS provider  Must have the skills to evaluate Must have a working knowledge of the equipment

PHTLS Courses
PHTLS Courses PROVIDER COURSE 16-hour course Flexible schedule Available for First Responders, Basic, Advanced, or  combined audiences 4-year recognition
PHTLS Courses INSTRUCTOR COURSE 8-hour course Designed to train instructors Must be taught by State Coordinator or designated Affiliate Faculty
PHTLS Courses REFRESHER COURSE Available to PHTLS and BTLS providers to maintain current recognition status 8-hour course Flexible schedule 4-year recognition
PHTLS Courses ALL  PHTLS courses MUST be approved by the International Office at least 30 days prior to the start date of the course.

Instructor’s Manual The purchase of IMs from the publisher requires a secure access code. If additional copies of the IM are needed, contact the local Affiliate Faculty or State Coordinator.
Instructor’s Manual Copyrighted material — can only be used for approved PHTLS programs
Instructor’s Manual PROGRAM REFERENCE GUIDE – LECTURES Slides present scenarios, bulleted key points, and graphics Slides do not stand alone, must be used with lesson plans
Instructor’s Manual PROGRAM REFERENCE GUIDE – LESSON PLANS Covers all objectives for each lecture Adheres to the core measurable items of each chapter Provides additional support for the preparation of delivering a lecture
Instructor’s Manual PROGRAM REFERENCE GUIDE- SKILL AND FINAL EVALUATION STATIONS ONLY  scenarios presented in IM are to be used, no substitutions Providers must meet all expectations in station to qualify as passing

Policies and Procedures Designed to reflect the most up-to-date administrative guidelines for PHTLS Every instructor should be familiar with this document, course coordinators MUST be familiar with it because all guidelines for running programs are listed Adopted by the Executive Council in April 2005 and currently in use Updates are available online at www.PHTLS.org
