This chapter reports on a study that examined how advocacy was enacted by four tutors in an elementary after-school ESL program in the United States. The tutors understood their role as advocates in three main ways - as being welcoming to students, as voicing for students, and as promoting student learning. Through interviews and observations, the researchers investigated how the tutors conceptualized advocacy and put it into practice. The study provided insight into how advocacy takes local and dynamic forms in informal education settings like after-school programs.
