This document defines key terms related to soil moisture content:
1) Available soil moisture is the difference between the amount of water in soil at field capacity and permanent wilting point.
2) Field capacity is the water content after free water has drained from soil through gravity.
3) Permanent wilting point is the soil moisture content at which plants will wilt and die as they are unable to extract sufficient water.
4) Available water content is calculated as the difference between field capacity and permanent wilting point.
