- 2. GREAT FUTURES START HERE. Dear Friends, The A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club has operated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization since 1966. It is affiliated with Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a nationwide organization of nearly 1,200 Clubs with a similar core mission of serving some four million children and teens through Club membership and community outreach. We offer an alternative safe place for Birmingham and Bessemer neighborhood children to stay out of trouble, remain in school and succeed in life. Our mission of inspiring and enabling young people of the Birmingham metro area, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring adults, allows us to reach more than 1,000 children each year, ranging in age from 6 to 18. These boys and girls pay just $8 per year to use our facilities and participate in a variety of enrichment programs. We focus on health and nutrition, character and leadership skills, education and career development, art, music, sports and recreation. We are here to tutor, mentor and guide these “at risk” children and youth. As an alumnus, I understand how important a safe and nurturing home away from home can be for a child. Our goal every day is to provide a caring alternative for our members that values them as individuals and encourages them to explore their personal interests. Our Board of Directors and staff take that responsibility very seriously. We care deeply for our members and are proud to have them grow in our Clubs. CHARACTER & LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Youth of the Year, a program for Club members promoting service to Club, community, family; academic success, strong moral character, life goals, poise and public speaking . EDUCATION & CAREER DEVELOPMENT Project Learn, reinforces and enhances the skills and knowledge that members ages 6 to 8 learn at school during the hours they spend at the Club. Center for a New Generation, a premier after-school and summer academic and arts enrichment program designed to support “strivers” who represent aspiring students in need of additional nurturing and support for academic and personal success. HEALTH & LIFE SKILLS SMART Girls, designed to encourage healthy attitudes and lifestyles that will enable early adolescent girls to develop to their full potential Passport to Manhood, a 14 session program that concentrates on specific aspects of manhood through highly interactive activities. THE ARTS Fine Arts, program focuses on developing skills and interests in graphic art, digital art, art history, music, dance and drama to create meaningful projects and programs that lead to heightened exposure and enhanced skill development. SPORTS, FITNESS & RECREATION Athletics, program emphasizes the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship, constructive leisure time, stress management, and the appreciation for outdoors through organized league and inter-mural activities “Without the Boys & Girls Club, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Gaston Boys & Girls Club we are building our capacity for deeper impact in the lives of children in the Birmingham metro area. We are available for all youth in the community. Our Club is acutely aware of the challenges youth face daily. The Club’s professional and caring staff provides members with daily guidance, a sense of belonging and the skills they need to succeed in life. We engage young people from age 6 to 18 years old in activities that enable them to develop self-esteem and essential life skills. The Club offers programs in five key areas: OUR PROVISIONS A safe place for young people after school and during the summer months. . . Safe Life-enhancing programs that produce successful life outcomes by opening young minds, creating aspirations and enhancing academic achievement. Relationships with caring, trained adults. Acceptance, hope and opportunity that lead to increased confidence and a brighter future. 2
- 4. GREAT FUTURES START HERE. THE NEED IS HERE Whether it be a child falling behind in school, showing signs of a broken home or struggling with college readiness, we are here to help. Our Club has two immediate needs, increase staffing and transportation. Our organization is built on surrounding our children with caring and nurturing adults. Your generous gift enables us to engage more skilled and committed team members to positively impact the lives of our young people. Currently our member-to-staff ratio is 1:20. Our goal, by the end of 2015, is to significantly reduce the member-to-staff ratio to 1:12. This increase will achieve three goals: More personalized engagement between staff and members Improve member retention Improved overall experience for members THE ANSWER IS HERE We have learned that the level of impact a Club has on young people depends on how often and how long members participate as well as how the Club implements five key elements. We know the most important element of our program is surrounding our members with caring nurturing adults. A Safe Positive Environment Club staff, facilities, program offerings and age- appropriate settings create stability, consistency and a sense of physical and emotional safety for members. The Club provides structure and clearly defines acceptable behaviors. Fun Clubs generate fun for members. Members develop a strong sense of belonging through connections they establish with staff and peers. Staff members make the Club feel like home, fostering a family atmosphere and creating a sense of ownership for members. Supportive Relationships Club youth develop meaningful relationships with peers and adults. Staff members actively cultivate such relationships to ensure that every member feels connected to one or more adults and peers. Staff members demonstrate warmth, caring, appreciation, acceptance and proper guidance in their interaction with members. Opportunities & Expectations Club youth acquire physical, social, technological, artistic and life skills. Clubs encourage members to develop more character and behave ethically. Staff members establish and reinforce high expectations and help young people do well in school and pursue a post-secondary education. Recognition Clubs recognize and affirm young people’s self- worth and accomplishments. Staff members encourage youth and provide positive reinforcement as they make improvements and experience successes. 3

United Way of Central Alabama (UWCA) is a strong partner of the A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club. As a UWCA agency, we currently receive 43% of the Club’s current annual budget. However, in order to build a better community through impactful youth engagement and empowerment, we must develop stronger individual and corporate partnerships we invite you to join with us in supporting the A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club’s Great Futures Start Here Campaign.
