It’s 2030, and Ian is a Junior in high school.
Ian enjoys learning, but often struggles to
perform well because he has trouble fully
understanding the material. He feels
frustrated when his tests and essays are
returned with poor marks, even after he
thought he had a better grasp of the
concepts. He feels embarrassed to ask his
teacher for help, so often relies on text-
based AI tools to answer his questions
about the material.
In class, Ian’s teacher announces a new
project, where each student will research on
plants and prepare an in-class presentation.

The assignment sounds interesting to Ian,
but he finds it stressful to start researching
about broad subject
Ian’s snaps out of his thoughts when he hears his
teacher announce that she wants the students to
use a brand new AI tool. Ian is surprised,
because generally his teachers have been
suspicious of AI — and after his disappointing
experience last year, he has been too.

But, his teacher tells them about how this tool will
help enhance their critical thinking as part of a
process-driven approach. And because of this,
most of their grade will be using the tool to share
their process. It all sounds good on paper, but Ian
is excited to try it for himself.
On that particular project, for the first time,
Ian used AI to completely write his paper
and presentation script. He was amazed
the AI tool worked so well and didn’t
require much effort on his part. He even
got an A on the paper and his teacher
never noticed the writing wasn’t his.

But, when it came to the Q&A after the in-
class presentation, he wasn’t able to
answer any of the questions because he
hadn’t actually learned about the topic in-
detail.

Revised Story Beats & Script

At the end of the project, Ian submits his
mind map and the paper, and delivers a
detailed, thoughtful presentation. He’s
proud of himself when, this time, he’s
able to answer the thought-provoking
follow-up questions after he presents
with ease and confidence.

He’s even happier when, a week later, he
receives the final grade on his project —
an A!

A few months later, Ian and a friend are
visiting the Met during a trip to New York, and
happen upon Washington Crossing the
Delaware.

Remembering back to his history project, Ian
recalls to his friend that the painting actually
depicts only one of three different crossings
of the Delaware River, all of which occurred
on Christmas night.

Ian’s friend is surprised by this very specific
factoid from the Revolutionary War, laughs,
and teases Ian for being a “history buff” ...

...but then asks where he learned it from.
