Baffling
Problem Statement
•Flight Inspection - good job at identifying obstructions, terrain, and VGSI sighting issues
• However information in Flight Inspection Reports significantly varies and is reported
differently from each inspection crew.
•Order 6850.2B calls out all the tolerances for VGSIs, OCS, etc., however doesn’t take into
consideration what Flight Inspection is looking for and expecting.
•Similar situation with AC – 150/5340-30G. Airports are designing and installing VGSIs
according to the AC.
•FAA calls out TWO different 3-dimensional triangles in space with guidance information that
conflicts!
Expected Resolution:
•Expecting an FAA Working Group discussion on how to resolve.
•Recommendation: When installing new or fixing old VGSI systems that will require FAA
Flight Check, require a survey of the visual light signal angle of the VGSI at each light
housing assembly (LHA). This is NOT required now, and could resolve many issues by
identifying vertical and horizontal obstructions, terrain, and sighting issues prior to Flight
Check.
