Scene I:
Teacheris upat the boardand studentsare workingat theirtables.
Teacherstates: All rightclass,let’sgetour “All AboutMe” assignmentoutandgo overthem. Ok,taking
the firststatement“Ilike to....” whatwere some thingsy’all liketodo?
Studentscall out- I like todance;I like toplaybasketball;Ilike tosing;etc.
Teacher- Okay - these are all great thingstodo. Um...didanyone saytheylike toread? Silence ...No
one?
Student: Well,it’snotlike Idon’tknowhow,it’sjust,Ilike todo funstuff inmy spare time.
Otherstudent: Yeah,readingisfine andall,butit’snot as cool as otherthings - like playingvideo
games. Nowthat’squalitytime.
Teacher: Well,Ithinkyou’ll find thatreadingcanbe as cool as the nextthing – you justhave to find
somethinginterestingtoreadabout. I have an idea,let’stake all the factsyouwrote about inthe “All
AboutMe” assignmentandsee if we can finda bookthat matcheseachone of yourinterests.
Student: Ms. ____ you can try, butI don’tthinkthere isanythingI like thatwill be inabook.
Teacher: We’ll see aboutthat….are y’all upforthe challenge?
Students individually: Sure!... Whynot?…. We can try it…
Teacher: Ok, if we are goingto findbookstomatch your All AboutMe facts, I wonderwhere we should
go…
One student: The MediaCenter? (sayingquestioningly)
Teacher: That’s Right! Okay everyone,let’sgetmoving.
Scene II:
Teacher: Nowthat we are in the Media Center,let’s getreadytofindsome books. We reviewedthe
firstquestion inthe All AboutMe assignment…(cuttoslide with?andanswerswithchildren’svoices
readingthe responses) butnowlet’sfindbookstomatch. _________, you saidyoulike todraw. Did
youknowthere are booksthat can helpyoulearntodraw?
Student: Really? Cartoonstoo?
Teacher: Well,let’sfindout. Let’slookatthe DeweyWall to see if we can locate a bookabout drawing.
What numberare we goingto lookfor?
Studentpointstothe chart: Well,itlookslike Artisinthe 700 section. Oh..here itis – Booksabout
drawingshouldbe inthe 740s.
_______ (Childwhosaidhe likedtodraw): Ok,there’sbooksaboutdrawing,butI wantto learnmore
aboutdrawingcartoons.
Teacher: Well,let’sheadovertothe 700s and see whatwe can find.
Group travelstothe sectionand ________ starts lookingthroughthe books. He pullsone out.
Teacher: Which bookdidyoufind_________? (Close upshotof the bookhere?) (booksuchas
Cartooningforkids.)
Teacher: One down. Let’s move on. Now that we’ve discoveredthatthere are booksaboutdrawing,
let’smove onto the nextquestion –(cutto slide withheroquestion). Whydon’tyouteam upand see if
youcan find more aboutyouin the mediacenter.
Team goestosee if theycan findtheirheroes – camerawill follow the grouptothe biographysection
and boyswill locate theirbooks.
Student:Iknowwhere we goto findbooksaboutCoby Bryant – I saw ithere the otherday. Now I just
have to rememberwhere…
OtherStudent: I know…let’strythe BiographySection –Ibet we’ll finditthere. (Boysfindbookand
close upon bookendsscene.)
Question3—If Icouldgo anywhere Iwouldgo…Africa,the moon,Hawaii,the zoo/beach,the White
House;Teamgoesto locate booksin the nonfictionsection.
Student: I wantto go to the moon - where are you goingto go?
Otherstudent: I’mgoingon an AfricanSafari – I want to see anelephant. (Scene endswithaclose shot
of books)
Question4– Careers
Scene openswithteacherbythe Deweywall –studentscome upand askswhere to findbooksabout
becomingapolice officer. Teachershowsstudentthe sectionof the decimal system- section330 for
careers. Studentsrunoverto the nonfictionsectionandlocate theirbook.
Last Scene afterall topicscovered: Teacher: I thinkwe can all agree that there are booksthat wouldbe
funto read inour mediacenter. Nowthatwe’ve located booksthatsupportyourinterests,how about
we take a fewminutesto findbookstocheckout andread. Let’smeetatthe checkoutdeskin3
minutes. (Teachersetsatimer). Childrenspreadoutaroundthe mediacenter.
Two childrenare talking. One says,“I neverknew all these thingsIlike canbe foundinbooks.” Other
one: “Yeah, I know….maybe thisreadingthing iscool.”
Final Scene: Childwalkinguptocheck outstationloadedwithbooks: Student: Uh….Ms.______, how
manybooksdidyou say we can checkout?”
