3. Explain the nature and
the importance of art.
ACTIVITY
 Look around. Choose one thing
( shawl/kumbong or piece of paper.
Choose 1 member the as model. Use the
shawl or kumbong creatively to create
something artistic. Present to the class.
Explain the relevance to art.

 1. How did you find the activity?
 2. Why did you choose that design?
 3. Why do you consider it as an art?

THE FEATURES OF ART.
 • Man creates Art
 • Art exists with Man
 • Art imitates
 • Art interprets
 • Art expresses and communicates
 Art affects delights and evokes a reaction
UNDERSTANDING ART
 Marcos (2006) –various meaning of art
 1. Ability- human capacity to create things of
beauty and things that stir us
 2. Process – art encompasses acts, such as
drawing, painting, sculpture, designing
buildings and using camera to create.
 3. Product- completed work or final product
 Art: An introduction to Humanities
( Cerbo et.al, 2010)
 1. Art as skill and mastery- mastery that is
manifested in the outstanding product of an
endeavor which is an expression of man’s ideas
and emotions.
2.Art as a process or product of a creative skill
because it involves arranging the aesthetics
elements in an artistically interesting and
appealing manner. These includes sculpture,
painting, music, literature, architecture, dance and
theater.
 .
 3.Art as a universal language- The language of art
is diverse
 Literature uses colorful words, imagery, figurative
language
 Music uses melody, harmony, dynamics and other
elements
 Dance make use of graceful movements and
choreography
 Theater uses most, if not all of the elements and
other art form
 Painting, sculpture and architecture share the
visual elements of color. Line, shape, form, space
and texture.
 4. Art as a representation of reality
Accdg. to Aristotle- art is a reflection
or mirror of reality.
Traditional idea is art as imitation of
life
Plato- the essence of a thing is more
‘real’ than the thing itself.
Some advocated that reality is not
what the physical make-up of it but
what it stands for, its essence, the
reality.
 5. Art reflects the characteristic of a period

depicted in all art works
