The Holocaust resulted in the persecution and murder of 6 million Jews and others between 1933-1945 by Nazi Germany and its collaborators. Adolf Hitler rose to power in Germany after World War 1 and established a racist totalitarian regime. He believed Germans were racially superior and that Jews were a threat. The Nazi government systematically stripped away Jews' rights, forced them into ghettos and concentration camps, and industrialized mass murder in death camps. Most victims died from overwork, starvation, exposure or gas chambers. The Holocaust demonstrates the dangers of unchecked racism and totalitarianism.
