An Introduction to
Rapid Prototyping
- POORNANAND PARIMALAKANTHAN
Definition of prototyping
• ‘Prototype’ is derived from a Greek word – ‘PROTO’
• ‘PROTO’ means first/original from which something useful is developed
• Example of derived words – Proto-star, Proto-planet
Definition of Rapid prototyping
• Any Technology or process that is capable of producing free form prototypes or
physical objects from 3D CAD data is called Rapid prototyping
3D CAD Data Physical objects

Additive manufacturing Vs. Subtractive manufacturing
Additive Manufacturing Subtractive manufacturing
Technologies that build 3D objects by adding layer-upon-layer
of material
Technologies that build 3D objects by removing material
Eg. – SLS, DMLS, SLA, FDM…. Eg. – CNC Milling

Need for RPT
• Compress the PDC timeline
• Launch the product well ahead of competitors
• Design frozen at an earlier stage of PDC
• Drawings can easily be released for quotation to tooling vendors
• Apt for small Vol. production
• Design intricacy is not an issue at all
• Speed (Crash test case study)
• Acts as a tool between product designers and tooling vendors
• Reverse Engineer almost anything
RPT applications Medical Fields

RPT applications in Tooling Industry – Conformal cooling
RPT parts for tool replacements (Shop floor applications)
3D Printed Jigs & Fixtures
Reverse Engineering – almost anything
RPT parts replacing Inj. Molded components
40% Glass filled PA6 material 3D printed parts
40% GF PA6 – undergoing pressure test
RPT applications in Textile industry
RPT applications in Furniture and interior design
RPT out in space

A Rapid Prototyped Part is worth 1000
Drawings”
