An introduction to Twitter
Université Paris 13 Nord 11/23/09 One simple question: What are you doing? Twitter, founded by Jack Dorsey , Biz Stone , and Evan Williams in March 2006 (launched publicly in July 2006), is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to post their latest updates. An update is limited by 140 characters and can be posted through three methods: Twitter website Short Message Service (SMS) Third-party applications (TweetDeck, Seesmic, ecofon etc.) 1. What is twitter?
Université Paris 13 Nord 11/23/09 DM = Direct Message 2. Twitter’s language RT = Retweet allows Twitter users to share the best links, tweets, and gems they find from others using the service. @ = Use to reply and always include proceeding a Twitter ID in a reply.
Université Paris 13 Nord 11/23/09 3. What’s hot on twitter? The simplest way to see trends on Twitter is on their official search page ( http://search.twitter.com ). Hot trends on Twitter appear on the search page and on the twitter homepage, and clicking any will bring up a feed of the public conversation. Of course, there are a wide variety of web apps that can help people see trends on Twitter. Ex: airplane crash in the US, death of Michael Jackson, etc.
Université Paris 13 Nord 11/23/09 3. What’s hot on twitter? One of the most complex features of Twitter is the hashtag , a topic with a hash symbol (#) at the start to identify it. The hashtag is a favorite tool of conferences and event organizers, because if we append a certain hashtag to an event, it becomes easier to find that in search, and more likely the topic will be hot. Ex: #leweb08 for the big Internet Event “Le Web Paris 2008”
