Analysis of example student radio Trailers:
I looked at a few examples of radio trailers that have been created by students in the past.
By hearing some of these, this has given me an insight to the typical codes and conventions
of this particular product and the range of elements that could be applied to my own. These
codes and conventions are significant as all of the radio trailers that I listened to, followed
the same pattern.Eg: finishing the script by talking about the channel it would be aired on
and the date the documentary would be released, having a range of interviews included
(vox pops and expert), including a range of facts and statistics about the subject, and this
could be gathered from the topic research I have collated. Also, a variety of different sounds
have been added to make the trailer more lively and entertaining to listen to. In some of the
radio trailers the sounds have been specific to the topic of the documentary, for example
one of the products we looked at focused on the addiction to mobile phones and the noises
in the trailer included ringtones and dials that a mobile phone would make which gives the
listener an idea of what the rest of the radio trailer is about. In another example, a group
created a trailer on video games and at the end of the clip they added the sound of a video
game ending (eg: the end of a round) which is inspiration for my own product.
Belowisa table showingthe positivesandnegativesof the studentradiotrailerIlookedat:
Positives: Negatives:
- The channel that the documentary
would be aired on
- The date the documentary would
be on
- Range of music/sound effects
- Clear voices and script spoken
slowly so that the words are heard
properly (not rushed)
- Montages of interviews (some
quotes)
- Use of rhetorical questions to
engage and direct the speech to
the listener
- “Dramatic language” to hook the
listener eg: using emphasis to
exaggerate what the documentary
will include
- Some of the effects didn’t work
eg: overlapping of voices (not
clear)
- Some of the noises/sound effects
did not relate to the topic of the
radio trailer
- In some radio trailers, the voices
off the off screen presenters were
“too monotonous”- not lively or
energetic which makes it boring to
listen to
