Boondall Wetlands is currently managed by the local State Government, Brisbane City Council and
also has many volunteers that educate the public and help to maintain the atmosphere of the
ecosystem. The Council acquired this land in the 1960s and then in the 1970s/80s the wetlands were
planned for development. Concern of the public resulted in the creation of Boondall Wetlands in
1990 and the Environment Centre was then opened in 1996.

2.1 Location
Boondall Wetlands lies at the edge of Moreton Bay between Nudgee Beach, Boondall and
Shorncliffe and includes approximately 1500 hectares of tidal flats, mangroves, saltmarshes,
melaleuca wetlands, grasslands and open forest.
The location of the two different sites selected to be assessed are provided in the map below (figure
1). Site 1 is located at the marina with a major mangrove ecosystem and a surrounding recreational
land area that may affect the overall quality of the site. Site 2 is located beside the Gateway
Motorway, the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, a nearby airport and a waste disposal yard. Both sites

earth. While they only occupy a very small percentage of land area, wetlands can be located all over
the planet, ranging from near the northern and southern poles all the way to the tropics. Many
biological, chemical and physical properties of wetlands allow them to provide various functions to
surrounding ecosystems, and humans have found personal value from several of these ecological
functions. Unfortunately, a history of exploitation of wetland services has led to their destruction
and degradation. The loss of wetland area has consequences for many aspects of the environment

experienced a complex relationship as a growing population has mandated an increase in food
production, leading in turn to the conversion of wetlands. While previously these ecosystems
prevailed in areas around the world, generating wildlife habitat, clean water, and performing
ecosystem services vital to the survival of specific communities, they are now disappearing from the
landscape and reappearing as row crops. This transformation is specifically evident in areas of the
country, such as Northwest Ohio where the Great Black Swamp once sat. While the ability to
produce food and fiber for new and expanded generations is vital, so are many of the resources that
these wetland areas furnish, such as access to water for developing countries. The amount of
agricultural land is increasing, and wildlife is more often finding their home ranges now
encompassed in this crop production. This competing relationship between agriculture and wetlands

the detrimental power of hurricane force and storm surges. There are two reasons for this. The first
is that New Orleans has a very low elevation relative to the surrounding sea level, the second is the
lack of Louisiana's natural defense against storm surges; that is the coastal wetlands and its barrier
islands.
The location of the city has always been very low in relation to the sea level, but the amount of
human growth and expansion has caused the city to sink deeper into the landscape. When New

As Katrina grew stronger and stronger, the warnings were crystal clear. As said by National
Hurricane Center Director Max Mayfield Aug. 28 as the storm approached;
"All signs point to it becoming one of the strongest hurricanes ever to hit the United States."
One Weather Service meteorologist even voiced a very prophetic Katrina announcement, stating
that: "Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks."
