- 4. 1999-2002 The era of dancing skeletons
- 5. Passion, creativity & hard work make you a designer. Not a college degree.
- 6. Always think of your design as a story. Narratives aren’t just for angsty teen wizards and sparkly vampires.
- 7. Always be curious and willing to learn. Being skateboard-shaped (not T-shaped) is the closest we get to becoming unicorns.
- 8. Bonus lesson: KLF’s “White Room” is still one of the dankest albums of all time.
- 9. 2003-2010 Growing as a designer
- 10. Don’t be afraid to re-invent yourself. Job hopping isn’t a sin when you’re a designer.
- 11. Use all projects, successful or otherwise, to grow. Don’t underestimate the power of writing down what you learned.
- 12. Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman. Always be Batman.
- 13. 2011-2014 Rebellion against the norms
- 14. Don’t be afraid to open up your process to the public. (if that’s possible from the business perspective)
- 15. Don’t be a follower. Familiarity helps, but never let trends define what would work in your project.
- 16. Personas don’t always work. Consider using moods instead.
- 17. 2015- Lessons on creative leadership
- 18. You don’t become a design leader by nomination. You become a design leader by taking initative and responsibility.
- 19. Everything is always about money. So be prepared to wrap anything and everything around it.
- 20. Always bring a junior designer to your projects. You should never stop growing, so make mentorship a two-way street.
- 21. Good team cultures are created. Be explicit about it, and invite everyone to join.
