• Health is defined as both physical and mental well
being.
• Ill health can include physical injuries and mental
ailments.
• Accidents are unplanned events that can lead to
injury.
• Safety is the control of unplanned events.

Health and Safety Induction Aims and Objectives
 To ensure all employees understand our health
and safety requirements.
 To enable employees to recognise and control
hazards.
 To improve health and safety through effective
management, communication and training.

What Does Poor H & S Mean?
• Civil liability.
• Criminal liability.
• Poor business – less orders.
• Fewer jobs
• High staff turnover.
• Higher insurance premiums.
• Less profits.

What is the Price of H & S?
• Each year around 230 people die at work.
• Prison sentences of up to two years for breaches
of statutory duties.
• Unlimited fines for breaches of statutory duties.

Causes can usually be controlled.

is seen by all employees and those working on the
organisation's premises. It represents the
position/policy of the organisation with respect to
Health and Safety.

 Safe use, handling, transport and storage of
substances and articles.
 Provision of information, instruction, training and
supervision.
 Safe place of work access and egress.
 Safe working environment with adequate welfare
facilities.

utilising the following:

Steps to Risk Assessment
 Hazard identification.
 Persons at risk.
 Evaluation of risk level and risk controls.
 Risk controls (existing & additional).
 Record findings of risk assessment.
 Monitor and review.

Hazards & Risks
 Hazard - An element / substance which has
the potential to cause harm.
E.g. electricity.
 Risk – The likelihood of it occurring.
E.g. electrocution.

Identifying Hazards
 A short list of some of the regulations – there are
many.
 Management of health & safety at work.
 Manual Handling.
 Display Screen equipment.
 Workplace health, safety & welfare.
 Provision & use of work equipment.

Investigating Accidents
Purpose:
 To identify what occurred before and after the
incident.
 To identify shortcomings.
 To prevent it happening again.
 Investigations never apportion blame.

Accident Reports
 All accidents must be reported even if there are no
injuries.

First Aid
The aim of first aid is to:
 Prevent minor injuries becoming major.
 Prevent death.
The First Aid kit is located:
 The First Aiders are:

In Case of Accidents
 Remove the danger IF you can do so safely.
 Summon first aid.
 Note the witnesses.
 Alert your supervisor.

PPE
 Personal protective equipment is provided for your
work as a last resort if hazards cannot be
controlled by other means.
 Faulty PPE must be reported to your supervisor
ASAP.

Fire Safety
The aim of fire safety is to:
 Prevent fire.
 Detect fire.

Causes of Fire
 Arson.
 Electrical faults.
 Poor housekeeping.
 Smoking.
 Carelessness.

Fire Needs
 Oxygen.
 An ignition source.
 Fuel.
Take away one of these needs and the fire does not
exist.

Effects of Fire
 Burns.
 Oxygen depletion.
 Building damage.
 Heat.
 Smoke damage.
 Death.
 All of the above can have a negative effect on our
business.

Preventing Fire
 Store combustibles correctly.
 Good housekeeping practices.
 Check electrical equipment.( PAT )
 No smoking policy is in place.
 Alarm systems in place.

Equipment & Training
All personnel will be trained in fire safety.
This includes knowledge of:
 Raising the alarm.
 Evacuation.
 Assembly points.
 Fire extinguishers location & use.
 Fire wardens.

Fire Knowledge
You need to know:
 Escape routes.
 Location of equipment & usage.
 Meaning of signage

Electricity
We need to protect against:
 Danger from the system & equipment.
 Abuse of the system & equipment.
 Unauthorised repairs.
 Unauthorised usage.

Effects of Electricity
 Burns.
 Electric shock.
 Explosion.
 Fire.
 Secondary effects.

Reportable Faults
 Insufficient sockets.
 Misuse of extension cables.
 No isolation switches.
 No signage outlining high risk areas.
 Abuse.
 No competent people.

Portable Appliances
 Any item with a plug attached.
 All appliances must be PAT tested annually.
 No non-company appliances allowed unless tested
and with permission.
 All appliances must be physically examined before
use – bare wires etc.
 Any appliance found to be faulty must not be used.

Work Equipment
 Anything used at work & it must be:
 Suitable for its intended use.
 Adequately maintained.
 All personnel:
 Must be sufficiently trained.

Working at Height
Any height above 2 metres may lead to:
 People falling.
 Objects falling.

Manual Handling
Lifting, pulling, pushing, carrying & moving of an
object by physical force.

Manual Handling Factors
 The task.
 The individual.
 The load.
 The environment.

Employers Duties
 Avoid manual handling if possible.
 Risk assess activities.
 Reduce any risk.
 Provide information, instruction, training and
supervision.

Employees Duties
 Take reasonable care.
 Co-operate with the employer.
 Follow training guidelines and use systems correctly.
 Report any danger.
 Control of substances hazardous to health
Employees must:
 Follow all safe systems of work.
 Use safety controls.
 Use PPE where required.
 Report defective PPE where necessary.
 Maintain good personal hygiene.
