Applying Narrative Theory-
VladmirPropp’s Theory of Narrative
Trapped in Abyss
•The victim hero: the main man who is seen running
down the street, smoking from the bong ect.. Suggests he
is being watched, this is reinforced by over the shoulder
shot of the man which implies he is being followed from
behind and lots of central action is based around him

• The villain: who can be heard but not seen (voiceover)
and is speaking to directly to the man, point of view shots
and jump cut used to show his presence/ seeing things
from his perspective.

•The princess: the blonde curly haired lady who falls
victim to the villan (falls into his lair), is seen with blood
on her face and a worried look and is then seen locked up
waiting for her rescuers to come (her friends) infers she is
reliant on other people- which reinforces the stereotypical
view that victims are often female
Silent Hill revelation: 3D
• The villain: a small girl, with a corpse like face who is
followed by a black fog of darkness which implies she will
be the character who will disrupt the narrative.
• The hero: the young female who wakes from a nightmare
early on in the trailer, we are then given the information
that her father has been abducted to silent hill, thus she
becomes what Propp highlights as the seeker hero who is
  now the villains victim.
• The helper: the young male who walks the hero home
from school he then gets abducted himself and she now
  has 2 people to rescue
• The princess: two male characters who have been taken
by silent hill and are in danger of the villain. This
challenges Propps view that the victims (princess) are not
the female characters, they are males. Therefore the roles
have been reversed as the father (suggested by prop to be
the seeker hero is the victim) and the female
Sinister
• The hero: in the opening sequence we witness the new
arrival of a new family into their new home. The father
that does onto discover all the mysteries in the house
and tried to restore all equilibrium would be considered
    the hero.
• The villain: A pagan deity called Bacgul, who consumes
the souls of human children. It’s assumed that he lives
inside paintings as these are the gateways to his realm.
Once children are exposed to these paintings they
    become vulnerable to his abduction.
• The donor: The donor is the guy on the computer screen
who tells the father (hero) information about Bacgul and
    his origins.
• The princess: the hero’s little girl who comes vulnerable
    to Bacgul’s abduction
• The helper: this could be the police man. Although we
were only given a snapshot of him we can infer that he
goes on to help restore the equilibrium (due to the role
that police normally play in films and within society)
