Southern Africa (APPSA)
Overview
Background
 6-Yr Project (2013 – 2019)
 Project launched in Sep 2013 in three countries
 Malawi,
 Mozambique
 Zambia.
 Additional countries expected to join
APPSA Objective
To increase availability of improved agricultural
technologies in participating countries through:
i. establishing Regional Centers of Leadership on
commodities of regional importance
ii. supporting regional collaboration in R&D
iii. facilitating increased sharing of agricultural information
Funding & Centres of Leadership
1. World Bank – country specific loans
2. Variable amounts given
3. USD 30 million to each country
4. Angola: Likely to get over USD 50 million
Three Centres of leadership established
1. Malawi: Maize and maize-based farming system
2. Mozambique: Rice & Rice-based farming systems
3. Zambbia: Legumes & legume-based farming systems
