Data drives decisions. Having reliable, clean data is a goal of most
organizations. However, far too often the method for retrieving,
presenting and consuming this data is an afterthought for many
implementations. This session will help you understand the architectural
process required to provide your stakeholders with actionable analytics
that can drive the business forward. We will examine data models and
sources, reporting tools and processes, resources, access policies and
delivery methods. Prepare yourself and your organization for the full
analytics lifecycle.

What are we talking about?

Whether you are starting a new implementation of building a new
custom application, start off by asking what the business hopes to
uncover or what the analytical goals of the project are. This often falls to
the end of the process, but it can be much more effective as a first step
as it can lead to a more collaborative discussion. Users may know what
they want to see, but they may not know the underlying data model
well enough to know how to ask for it. By moving this to the forefront of
the project you are also much more likely to identify roadblocks earlier
in the process.
Where do we start?

As we start to uncover the reporting goals of the business it is important
to break this down further with the groups in the organization.
Executives will likely have common high level insight requirements
across the company, while different business units, such as sales and
service, may have much more granular and very different goals among
themselves. Repeating the goal identification process by business unit,
persona or role would provide much needed background on both the
commonalities and differences between what each group is looking for
related to analytics.

Our organization pays out commissions to internally to sales reps and sales
managers. We also pay out externally distributors and referral sources.
Currently the finance team calculates all commissions in spreadsheets and
then manually creates statements to send out monthly to all those receiving
commission payments.
The Sales team also has no visibility into their commissions earned without
manually tracking and updating in spreadsheets until they receive reports
from Finance.
