Artificial intelligence (AI) is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs. There are four main categories of AI: thinking humanly, acting humanly, thinking rationally, and acting rationally. Expert systems are a type of AI program that were developed in the 1970s, such as Mycin, which was designed to diagnose and treat infections in humans using a rule-based system. Natural language processing (NLP) is a subfield of AI concerned with interactions between computers and human language, with the goal of computers understanding human language at a level comparable to humans.
